Remembering the Real Madrid vs Castilla final 40 years on

On June 4, 1980, a historic Copa del Rey final took place as Real Madrid took on their B team, Castilla, in the showpiece event.

The senior side won 6-1, but this was a very impressive achievement for the B team as they knocked out Sporting Gijon, Real Sociedad and Athletic Club along the way.

Pirri and Javier Castaneda were the captains of the first and second team respectively that day for the final held at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and they reflected on it on Radio MARCA.

"We couldn't be completely sure we'd win because we played the B team in midweek sometimes and they'd beat us a lot of those times," Pirri recalled.

"But in the final, we didn't view them as Castilla.

"We had a great game, although the result was exaggerated."

Castaneda recalled how excited he was to go up against Pirri.

"He was my role model," Castaneda admitted.

Not all the Castilla players are proud of the runners-up achievement, though.

"I'm not at all proud of that final," said Paco, another of the Castilla players that day.

"We didn't go out in the right mindset for a Copa del Rey final.

"We should have fought them harder.

"We were so silly to not believe after having defeated Sporting Gijon, Real Sociedad and Athletic Club."
