Declan Rice has apologised to his teammates for his controversial sending off during Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Brighton on Saturday.
Referee Chris Kavanagh was quick to show the Gunners' midfielder a second yellow early in the second half for allegedly preventing Brighton's Joel Veltman from taking a quick free-kick.
Rice had already been booked for a heavy challenge on Veltman in the first half of the game at the Emirates, with the second yellow culminating in the England international's first sending-off of his career.
In a post-match interview, a remorseful Rice reflected on the red, first offering apologies to his teammates before accepting responsibility for his actions.
He said: 'I think from my behalf, that's my first [career] sending off, so I just wanted to apologise obviously to my teammates, which I've done, and to the fans.
'When you get sent off, it's never nice, you get a sense of guilt over you, and I was lucky today that my teammates really helped me out and we didn't lose the game. I'll learn from it.'
Despite his contrition, Rice admitted he was surprised to be sent-off for a an infraction he perceived to be quite minor.
'Yeah I was shocked, I think you could see in my face I was shocked,' Rice said. 'He's obviously gone over, I've not sprinted over and smashed the ball away, I've touched the ball with the outside of my foot.
'But look, this is the laws of the game. If you touch ball away, even a little bit, obviously it's a red card after my challenge in the first half which I fully accept was a 50-50 that I didn't win.
'But the second half one, especially with it being in the corner flag, they can't really progress anywhere from there. It was tough, it was harsh, but it's one of those things.
'I have to move on from it, I will be better for it and I can only praise the players for digging deep for me, and the manager for pushing everyone, and the fans as well who were unbelievable again this afternoon. That's how I see it.'
The red card has earned Rice a one-match ban, which coincidentally is the first North London Derby of the season.
The Gunners make the short trip to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Sunday 15 September, shortly after the conclusion of the international break.
It proved to be a particular low-note in the game that had a frustrating finish for Arsenal, who had led through Kai Havertz in the first half.
But Brighton's Joao Pedro – who Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta thought should've been penalised for a similar incident in the first half after the Brazilian kicked the ball away – equalised on the 58th minute.
The result means both teams retain their unbeaten start to the season, having both notched two wins from their first two matches.

Maybe it's time the FA teach Arsenal, Arteta and their fans the rules of football, because they seriously get upset over clear as daylight rules. They might be the only ones in football who are football illiterate.
He sits and listens to football results from the village without electricity. Certainly he wasn't privileged to watch a live match. Completely off tuned.

Thank God we didn't lose. It was needles, even the first yellow card he could've prevented.
It's okay we accept it but quote me. We shall witness several types of this incident before the season ends. With this no team should complain. Law is Law. Rules are rules, regulations are regulations and decrees are decrees.

Is tacking the ball throwing it to Rice's legs and kicking his legs without the opponent touching the ball or blocking you from kicking it a red card ? no , i might be wrong but to me it's not unless he( Rice) has tried to block the player from tacking the free kick

Stupid actions by Declan Rice. He hasn't learnt that most referees are biased against Arsenal.
Arteta must have or must have a proper lectures with them on this.... what many other teams would do as going against common and established rules and get away with it, even Arsenal do d smallest fraction, you will be punished and you have ambition, so you can't afford all this madness simple. Pedro kicked d ball a mile first half, nothing happened, you did d slightest now, Kavangh could have cautioned him, especially when he's on card b4 but no. Like many of them hate Arsenal, you should know this and stay far away. Rice was simply stupid and cost us vital points. These are the little details that decide d title in the end.

the problem here is not about rice not knowing the rules of the game ooooo. it's about other players doing same in the same match and going unpunished. Pedro did same in the first half by kicking the ball in a similar faction. that's the concern now.

Since Rice knew this and the consequences were card offence, why commit the offence deliberately and later apologise for the wrongdoing? For me, I discovered that childish attitudes and behaviour are affecting the Arsenal team. They can not take them anywhere. They were just there for entertainment, not to win trophies.

What is dubious rule, some people don't understand football at all, this rule is not new in football at all,how can a professional footballer behave like amateur, rice is with yellow card already, and the ref has blown foul against him and the ball is still in the field of play, he's opponent is trying to start the ball fast and he kicked the ball out of the field
Firstly, the Brighton guy taking a freekick without stopping the ball. The ball was in motion and he attempted to kick which itself is a foul kick. Stupid refereeing.
