Todd Boehly has a busy summer transfer window ahead, with offloading Chelsea players just as important as signing new ones
With Badiashile one of several Chelsea stars who have been affected by the bloated squad, Ferdinand has claimed that the alarm bells will be ringing for plenty of players. Speaking on BT Sport, the former Manchester United defender said: "I think the volume of players at Chelsea could be alarming for some of the players there.
"A lot of those players won’t know where they stand and many of them will be surplus to requirements come the summer. Looking at [Benoit] Badiashile, he’s sitting there, a young centre-back who can’t get into the Champions League squad.
"He’s thinking, 'I should be playing.' He’s probably sitting there looking at some of the players in front of him and going, 'Hold on a minute, how have I been overlooked here?' That will be happening continuously throughout the squad and that’s not a good place to be."
Earlier this month when Potter was sacked, concerns were raised regarding Chelsea's bloated squad. In an exclusive column for CaughtOffside, Stan Collymore said: "I think what Chelsea needed to do and what they were desperate to do under Todd Boehly was to try and get a coach in to develop the best young players coming through – the Lukaku’s, Salah’s and De Bruyne’s of yesteryear – and buy in the best young players from around the world, which makes perfect sense.
"Basically Boehly blinked, and he blinked at a time when Chelsea should’ve held on. Chelsea were never going to get into the top four this season.
"Maybe Europe wasn’t out of the question, and the theory was Graham Potter was going to get to the end of the season, then he could get rid of about 15/20 bodies from an incredibly over-bloated squad and have a full pre-season with the players he then had."
16 Chelsea players may have played their last Champions League game under Todd Boehly
