Roberto Firmino reveals he feared losing sight after Vertonghen clash

Roberto Firmino was forced to sit on the bench for most of Liverpool's Champions League match against PSG thanks to an eye injury inflicted by Jan Vertonghen a few weeks ago.

He made a swift return to the Liverpool side, however he has now revealed that there were some genuinely scary moments for him following the clash.

'I was scared of going blind in one eye and not being able to see again,' he told Sky. 'Thank God nothing like that happened and it gradually improved day after day.'

The incident happened during Liverpool's 2-1 win over Tottenham. Firmino was substituted after taking a finger to the eye.

'I was frightened, but the pain gradually passed after the doctor gave me a painkiller and it got better. When the incident happened, everything was blurry and I couldn't see out of my left eye.

'It's much better now. The pain has gone and I can't feel anything anymore. It's still a bit red, but I hope that clears up over time.'

Firmino scored after being subbed on late against PSG, grabbing the injury time winner. However, he's only scored twice in seven games for Liverpool so far in the Premier League this season.

He also failed to have an impact during Liverpool's loss to Napoli in the Champions League last night, where the team didn't muster a single shot on target.

Firmino is continuing his recovery while playing for the first team.

'Of course, I've been taking my medication and looking after it. Your eyes are very important as a professional footballer. Thank God everything is OK now.'
