Rochdale's 16-year-old Luke Matheson had a special night on Wednesday as he scored the equaliser to take Manchester United to penalties in the Carabao Cup third-round tie.

Mason Greenwood broke the deadlock for United in the 68th minute but up popped Matheson at the back post just eight minutes later to bring the League One side level.

The equaliser stunned Old Trafford but Matheson is a defender who the Premier League outfit are familiar with.

Sportsmail reported in September last year that both Liverpool and United were watching the teenager following his fairytale debut for Rochdale as a 15-year-old.

Matheson returned to begin Year 11 at Trinity High School in Manchester on the same day he made his first-team bow.

The youngster, who has played for England Under 17s, came on as a 13th-minute substitute in Rochdale's 2-1 Checkatrade Trophy win over local rivals Bury.

Matheson became the club's youngest ever debutant and in that clash he produced a man-of-the-match display.

The right back put in another star performance against the Red Devils on Wednesday night.

Rochdale could not quite pull off a great upset in the League Cup as they lost 5-3 in the penalty shootout but in Matheson they have a great talent.
