Brendan Rodgers admits Liverpool could be unstoppable this season, but believes they will never match their dynastic dominance from the 80s.
Former Reds boss Rodgers is set to welcome his old club to the King Power Stadium in Boxing Day’s big clash.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are unbeaten in the top flight this term and have not lost in the Premier League for nearly a year.
They enjoy a 10-point lead over second-placed Leicester and look set to improve on last season’s runner-up spot when they amassed 97 points.
The Anfield club scent more silverware after clinching the Champions League last term and the FIFA Club World Cup last week.
But Rodgers cannot see Klopp’s men lording it over the rest of the top flight for years to come like when Liverpool won the title seven times between 1980-1990.
“They’re a fantastic team and I don’t think you can argue against that,” said Rodgers. “Over time you would want to be winning the league. That’s the clear agenda for Liverpool, having gone so close last season.
“Of course, when you win the league, that’s the ultimate and it makes you want to do it over again. That’s the mood Liverpool will be in now, having won the Champions League and this world title.
“Every top team wants to say that they’ve won the league. If you can do it a number of times, that’s what you want to achieve. But it’s very difficult in the modern era as there are a number of teams who have great wealth.
“Many years ago, there were only a few teams who had that level of wealth so they could run away and win lots of titles. That’s pretty difficult now.”
Leicester are looking to bounce back from just their third loss of the season at Manchester City .
They are unbeaten at home and Rodgers wants his exciting young side to try and inflict Liverpool’s first League defeat.
He insists his Leicester team are a better side than when they lost 2-1 at Anfield in October.
Rodgers added: “You know it has to end at some time, so why not be the team that does it? That’s the whole idea – and to get three points.
“They’re a very resilient team. They have shown that. If they’re not playing at their best they still get the results, and that’s the mark of a team with a winning mentality, especially when it’s consistent.
“But you know that run is going to end and you want to be the team who can go out there and make that happen.”
Rodgers went close to the title in 2013/14, during his spell in charge at Anfield from 2012 to 2015. The club have since spent heavily on £67million goalkeeper Alisson and £75m Virgil van Dijk to evolve into winners.
Rodgers said: “We were part of the process when we were there with my staff and, for the next couple of years, Jurgen continued to build on that. Then they put in investment that brought it to the next
level in terms of wingers, goalkeepers and centre-half.
“Getting to some of the finals and losing the Europa League and in the Champions League final, that makes you better.
“That’s what I always say about losing. Sometimes it makes you better – and there is no better team than them in showing that.
“They kept going, working and fighting and eventually they won the Champions League. Now they have become world champions and everyone knows they want to win the league this year.”
