Rodri will miss final group match for breaking a new rule introduced at Euro 24

Manchester City star Rodri is set to miss out on Spain's final Euro 2024 group stage game against Albania next Monday, after he received a yellow card during their match against Italy.

It comes after the 27-year-old midfielder was also booked during Spain's 3-0 victory against Croatia. He was shown the card at a contentious point of the game, having appeared to foul Bruno Petkovic, as the Croatian went through on goal.

Rodri, in fact, could have been shown a red card for the incident, but instead, VAR opted not to award the harsher sanction, with Croatia being awarded a penalty.

According to UEFA's sanctions for the tournament, a player who receives two yellow cards will miss their side's next match.

The governing body have also introduced several new rules ahead of the European Championship.

One of the biggest changes aims to help ease the pressure on referees, with UEFA stating that captains will be the only players allowed to engage in a dialogue with the referee to discuss a decision.

That means any player found to have approached the referee showing a sign of dissent, will be shown a yellow card.

During Spain and Italy's hotly anticipated encounter on Thursday night, Rodri was booked before half-time after he appeared to remonstrate with referee Slavko Vincic, after Federico Chiesa put in a late challenge on one of the Spaniard's team-mates.

While the Italian was not booked, several Spain players surrounded the referee, who ultimately showed Rodri a yellow card.

Alvaro Morata is in fact Spain's captain, meaning he was the only player allowed to engage with the referee.

While Spain look set to be without their star man against Albania next Monday, they took the lead against Italy thanks to a bit of luck.

Nico Williams broke down the left flank, reaching the byline before squaring a dangerous ball in across the face of the goal.

While none of his team-mates were close enough inside the six-yard box to connect with the cross, Gianluigi Donnarumma appeared to parry the ball away from goal and into the knee of Riccardo Calafiori, who tapped the ball into the back of his own net.
