Five-time world football of the year Cristiano Ronaldo became the most following person on Instagram on Monday.
The Juventus forward surpassed American actress and pop star Selena Gomez, who has held the title since 2016.
Gomez, 26, overtook Ariana Grande two years ago in a list which is dominated by stateside entertainment stars.
But Ronaldo, who at the time of writing has over 144 million followers, has cemented his status as one of the most recognisable figures on the planet.
The Portugal international marked the news in relatively modest circumstances, with an image of him in the gym.
The development comes just months after he swapped Real Madrid for Juventus in a deal worth €100 million (£88.93m/$114m).
Ronaldo has already registered seven goals and four assists in 10 Serie A outings for a Juve side who are already six free at the top of the table.
Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar is the next highest sportsperson in 10th position with 104m followers.
Reality television personality Kim Kardashian, pop superstar Beyonce, actor and wrestler Dwayne Johnson, Kylie Jenner and singer Taylor Swift complete the top 10.

The logical point is not about LM10 or CR7. It is the difference in understanding of football by their fans. Let me explain. Ronaldo is a muscular player. He is like a machine and imposes himself (about his achievement & work rate particularly). He has the superiority complex as well. Meanwhile Leo is a gifted one, beauty and truly magical. He is a team man and accepts the co-players contribution wholeheartedly. The fans of both players also identify themselves with their stars traits. Hence, the fans of CR7 are aggressive. They can’t accept anyone above themselves, so it go same about CR7 also. They are as same as CR7 who is happy to only tell about his qualities, his work rate, his achievement, his everything. His fans are mechanized. The fans of Leo watch the football for its beauty, its magic and treat it as a team game. They have no hesitation to accept his team as their team (If Messi decided to change the club, his 80% fans will shift their loyalty to the new club). They have no regret if LM10 not scored in a match, but assisted brilliantly. For them, Leo is not about statistics (he has better statistics than any others), he is God gifted.
