Manchester United returned to action for the first time in 16 days against Newcastle United on Monday evening.
But they were extremely poor in the first half at St James' Park.
Ralf Rangnick's side started extremely slowly and fell behind after just seven minutes.
Allan Saint-Maximin cut inside from the left and produced a brilliant finish that found the corner of the net.
Newcastle had the better of the play for the remainder of the half but there were no further goals.
Rangnick would have wanted a reaction in the second half but he didn't get it from his side as it was more of the same.
With United struggling to get going, frustrations got the better of Cristiano Ronaldo as he produced a tough challenge on Ryan Fraser in the 57th minute.
Ronaldo sprinted across the pitch to try and retrieve a loose ball before booting Fraser.
He was shown a booking. He was perhaps lucky to avoid a red card.
It's not the first time this season that the 36-year-old has produced a tough challenge with his side up against the wall.
Ronaldo's mood would have improved shortly after when United equalised.
Edinson Cavani was substituted on at half-time and it was the Uruguayan who restored parity with 19 minutes remaining.
Newcastle could have won it late on but David de Gea produced a fine save to deny Miguel Almiron.
There were no further goals as the two sides shared the spoils.
United remain in seventh with 28 points, while Newcastle are 17 points further back in 19th.

Ronaldo is always frustrated and boring whenever he didn't score in any match. It's high time he retired from soccer

It is time to act as a legend and be a role model to the new young footballers/generations, they have to respect and being a patient in football is one way or the other to achieve your goals in your football career. But it is not good to become angry and you start kicking your opponents because of they’re doing well in the pitch, and they are much better to deny you to score a goal against their team. So you have to understand sometimes you cannot get the positive result from the game as you expected and it pains you, but that is how it’s and you have to accept it and take it easy cause at the end we’re all brothers and no one is enemy to another. Thank you so much, I’m Mgaza from Canada.

Ronaldo dosn't hit the ball on his feet properly I mean common if u dosn't score then give to ball other player create some chance but he didn't do that bcoz he is only want someone giving him ball and tap in the net thats only he know that he depend on others player Yah I know football is teamwork but first learn depend on yourself then depend on teammates but he dose't know that....cavani last goal draw the match but no one appreciate him bcoz he's not Ronaldo if that goal come from Ronaldo then his useless fans gonna drag Messi on it.... in Manchester United only one saviour David de gea

every player except degea was poor. maguire takes 100 hours on the ball and decides to pass back, at least he made some forward passes to Sancho on the wing sometimes. varane was very poor and made mistakes, the only positive was that he was able to win some balls. dalot can't even cross the ball, its pathetic, he only won the ball for saint like once, telles was useless. Fred lost the ball more times in 45 minutes than the days of the year and he Can't trap the ball or give a good forward pass. atleast he showed some energy towards end of the first half. mctominay is just a useless football and contributed nothing other than side passes. Bruno was poor by he gave some few forward passes that led to some good chances especially in the second half. he keeps complaining at whining like a girl rashford was so poor in the first half and couldn't dribble a stone if it was placed infront of him. he tried in the second half moving the ball forward and got into a dangerous position but his passing was poor. Sancho came in and created problems at the right but his final passing was terrible. I dont understand what the point of bringing on matic was. cavani was poor in his finishing and was lucky to get one goal. missed a sitter and was found in a good position but shot the air or something. at least he brought in much needed energy And was complaining like a girl Ronaldo hardly got a touch and the ball and his only highlight was a two useless attempt. he was just complaining from start to finish and didn't help encourage his teammates. he and bruno were making side comments probably they were insulting other players. at least he got into good positions sometimes but the passing to him was very very poor. the greenwood ball to him was poor when he was free, rshford couldn't find him when he was free in the box, cavani gave him a cross inside of simply passing the ball to him. terrible performance allround

No wonder you guys are in Europa league 🤦🏾♂️....I’m 100% sure in Ralf’s first press conference he said “it will take time on rebuilding this team”.
