Ronaldo lead the line for Manchester United and was able to score two goals on his return to Old Trafford.

He opened the scoring with a tap-in at the end of the first half however Newcastle responded quickly as Javier Manquillo equalised after the break.

Ronaldo then showed his speed and finishing skills as the 36 year-old astonishingly sprinted at 20.2 mph to drive through on goal and place the ball through the Newcastle goalkeeper's legs.

Later in the game, goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard capped an incredible day for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team.

In the aftermath of yesterday's game, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer praised the five time Ballon d'Or winner for his exceptional performance on Match of the Day.

He said: 'We all expected him to do well, we all expected him to score his goals and the performance that he put in was phenomenal.

'For 36 years of age, his energy and attitude is an example for any young kid watching.

'All I can say is just watch this guy week in and week out. Everything about him whether it is his movement, his ability in the air or his touch and control, it is all first class.'

After the game, Ronaldo was asked about his return to Old Trafford and the sensational reception he received from the United faithful.

He said: 'It's unbelievable. When I started the game I was so nervous, I swear. Maybe it didn't show but I was.

'I didn't expect to do that, to score two goals. Maybe one but not two. Of course, I'm happy to score the goals, I won't deny that, but the most important thing is the team.

'I belong to Manchester United. I arrived here at 18-years-old, they treated me unbelievably and this is why I came back. I'm so proud to be here and I want to win.

'Everyone knows that the football here in England is different than any part of the world. I've played everywhere and, to be honest, England is the most special one...

'This crowd is unbelievable and I'm going to give everything to make them proud of me. I didn't expect they would sing all game my name. The reception is incredible, but I'm here to win games, to help the team and get the club back where they deserve.

'Manchester United need to be where they deserve. It's to win to build a team, build a club and build a mentality this is what we are looking for.'
