Rosenior rues Chelsea mistakes after Champions League exit

Liam Rosenior lamented Chelsea's mistakes and their lack of a cutting edge after they were dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.

PSG had rallied to a 5-2 win in the first leg thanks to late brilliance from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and they cruised to a 3-0 victory in the second at Stamford Bridge.

Kvaratkshelia, Bradley Barcola and Senny Mayulu were all on target for the Parisiens as they ran out 8-2 aggregate winners.

The Blues have lost four successive knockout stage games for the first time in the Champions League, with this their joint-heaviest defeat on aggregate in a two-legged tie in the competition (alongside 7-1 versus Bayern Munich in the 2019-20 last 16).

And, timed at 13:57, PSG's second strike marked the earliest Chelsea have ever conceded two goals in a Champions League match.

Rosenior admitted his side were already up against it and did not help themselves with the way they started.

"A tough night. We knew it was a tough ask to start the game in the manner that we did," he told TNT Sports.

"We had the ball in the final third. You can't make mistakes at this level. We had the ball in their box, and Barcola hit one from 25 yards into the top corner. Their belief grows.

"They were clinical. The third goal, ball breaks, and he [Mayulu] hits in the top corner. I haven't looked at the stats yet, but we had a lot of shots.

"They didn't make mistakes. I want to thank the fans because they saw how hard the lads worked."

Chelsea had 18 shots in total, with nine of those on target as Matvey Safonov made a string of fine saves to protect PSG's clean sheet.

By contrast, Luis Enrique's side attempted eight shots, scoring with three of their five on target, and slightly edged the expected goals battle (1.1 xG to 1.0).

Chelsea's last hope of winning silverware this season is the FA Cup, in which they are through to the quarter-finals, while they are still in the fight for a top-four spot in the Premier League.

But they have been dealt a potential blow, with Trevoh Chalobah forced off with a bad-looking injury late in the game, leaving Chelsea to finish the game with 10 men, having used all their substitutes.

Reece James has already been ruled out this week with a hamstring injury, and Rosenior is hopeful Chalobah is not set for a long spell on the sidelines.

"Trevoh, I just asked the medical team. He's got a high ankle sprain, so I'm praying it's nothing too serious because we can't lose another defender," Rosenior added.

"When you go through a difficult run, you have to make sure your habits are right. We have a really difficult game at Everton, and we have to be at our best to get a result there."
