Roy Keane confirmed as Sky Sports pundit for Liverpool vs Manchester United

There are always fireworks when Liverpool play Manchester United, and that could well extend to the Sky Sports studio on Sunday with Roy Keane confirmed as a pundit for the big game.

Keane, as tough and ruthless with his opinions as a pundit as he was while commanding United's midfield, will join Liverpool legends Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness in providing analysis at Anfield.

That also means Keane could be seen back on the pitch of United's most famous rivals should Sky decide to take their men down to ground level for a portion of the broadcast.

Keane's former United team-mate Gary Neville – who he once rescued from a rampaging Patrick Vieira in the tunnel before a famous clash against Arsenal – will be on co-commentary duty, although expect to see him join the conversation from the stands or later in the studio.

Keane played in English football's biggest fixture 21 times, winning nine and losing seven for United.

He won an astonishing seven Premier League titles at Old Trafford, as well as the Champions League and four FA Cups.

Keane recently left his role as Martin O'Neill's assistant with the Republic of Ireland after a dismal run of form. His most recent position as a No 1 was at Ipswich in 2011 as his managerial career failed to reach anywhere near the heights of his playing days.

Keane has also been a high-profile pundit, leading ITV's analysis of the Champions League and international football in recent years, including last summer's World Cup.

Arsenal became Keane's whipping boys during the latter years of Arsene Wenger's reign, with the no-nonsense Irishman ripping apart the team's brittle performances on many occasions.

Keane will get the chance on Sunday to deliver his verdict on Arsenal's new regime under Unai Emery – the Gunners travel to Southampton in the day's early game.

Should United's miserable form under Jose Mourinho continue at Anfield, however, United fans should not expect Keane to go easy on his former club. He did once, after all, use an interview with United's own TV channel for an explosive rant at his then team-mates whilc club captain.

Sky's coverage of both Southampton vs Arsenal and Liverpool vs Manchester United starts at 12.30pm, with Keane on from the start.
