If Freddie Ljungberg wasn’t fully aware of the size of the task that is facing him during his interim spell in charge, he certainly does now.
There were some positive signs during the Swede’s first game, against Norwich City, but ultimately Arsenal fell short once again because of their usual achilles heel. Defending.
At times this was actually an improved performance compared to the final weeks under sacked Unai Emery. There was more structure to the side; they weren’t cut open time and again or comfortably outshot by the opposition.
They had the better of the game in a statistical sense and it’s been a fair while since that has happened. But their inability to deal with the threat of a counter attack was exposed yet again by a Norwich side who went into the game sitting second from bottom in the Premier League.
Arsenal dominated the first half yet went into the break 2-1 behind - with the hosts scoring twice on the counter.
Teemu Pukki scored the first and Todd Cantwell added the second moments before the interval with a twice-taken Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang penalty sandwiched in between.
Cantwell’s goal was a lovely finish but it came with Calum Chambers caught high up the field, just had he had been when Pukki opened the scoring.
Aubameyang did level things up early in the second half, but the expected push for a winner didn’t really materialise for the visitors. In fact they got worse.
The structure they played with before the break disappeared and only two fine saves from Bernd Leno - first from Kenny McLean and then from Pukki - stopped Norwich going in front for a third time.
The draw means Arsenal have now gone eight games without a win in all competitions and it leaves them seven points adrift of the top four.
The word coming out of the club is they will not rush into appointing a permanent successor for Emery and that they believe in Ljungberg they have a competent coach who can guide the ship until a new man is found.
But the way Arsenal ended this afternoon’s game showed that the scars of the past few months won’t be easily healed. The visitors were a mess for the final half hour and a better side would have certainly punished them.
Arsenal need a top coach to come in and sort this out. Ljungberg will no doubt give it his all and as he gets his feet under the table you would hope to see an improvement, but it would be unfair to expect someone with his lack of top level experience to fix a team with so many major problems.
Arsenal have now amassed 21 points from their first 14 league games. No team has ever gone on to finish in the top four from that position at this stage of the season, that is the size of the task facing Ljungberg.
The one big bonus is that he has Aubameynag to call upon. Six of Arsenal’s seven goals away from home in the league this season have been scored by the Gabon international, that’s how important he is to them.
It’s also a clear sign that his team-mates need to do more. Alexandre Lacazette flattered to deceive away from home again and Nicolas Pepe didn’t even get on the pitch, with teenagers Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka preferred to the club-record £72 million summer signing.
The reliance on Aubameyang remains absolute and Ljungberg needs to find a way of getting his other forwards scoring because the way things look, clean sheets are going to remain difficult to come by.
There may have been a new man in the technical area, but it was a case of same old Arsenal at Carrow Road.

My worry is that Arsenal as a team for some five years has been lacking character. It would take sometime for the team to get its bearing. There should be overhaul of the team with unproductive players offloaded.

to be honest with you under emiry arsenal would have lost that match. considering results of other big teams across Europe, the draw is a fair result. the next problem to be solved is that of defense and my opinion is that David Luiz is not at his best yet. our usual combination is Bellerin, holding, Sokratis and kolasinatch. we still need this combination, we can introduce Tierney as the game progresses. please whoever is in charge should leave out completely for now, SAKA and WILOCK. our midfield is very okey with Ozil, xhaka, guoadouzi and Cebalos or Torrera. Aubameyang and Lacazette is a good combination. if we are to use three strikers, then we drop either Cebalos or Torrera to accommodate Pepe. this is a very good team and am sure with this we can still remain in Europe next season. today arsenal played well but the defense let them down.

I'm telling you Arsenal issues are 3 fold, Midfield, Back line and Board in that order! But for now the priority must be on the midfield. Freddie don't start anyone whom can't, or won't run with purpose for 120 minutes!! Nuke the dressing room and let them all know playtime is over, now's time for men to take responsibility for their works on the field of life or death. Guendouzi great youngster, full of energy but way ward, and burns out early because of his lack of discipline, bench him! His energy is required, but with discipline otherwise he's more a liability than an asset! Torriera. another with the required energy and spirit, but appears to be a light weight, and it's nothing to do with his size, it's his heart, he's fearful so he always goes to ground in the challenge, and so if he wins the ball or loses the ball, he'll end up giving the ball away and usually in Arsenal half of the pitch. Xhaka technically weak, and low on workrate. Some say he is a leader but he has no vision and can't see danger before it manifests, if he could, and could organise his troops ahead of impending danger his short comings would go unnoticed, he can't, they are, bench him! Now I'm not going to tell you who to play, but you know the characteristics required of whomever you pick to play in there. If those suggested to be benched display these qualities consistently in training play them, but I know without seeing that certain youth players will give you these qualities all day, play them. Do the same regards the back line players! We know you haven't much to choose from but the board must support you in coming transfer window. Arsenal currently needs a clear out of at minimum 5 players and ideally 6 3 from back line, and 3 from midfield. And they must be replaced in the same window even if the existing players aren't sold, Arsenal still need 6.

Based on today's game I'd say Emery has left with his shadow still hovering around Ljunberg...
