Sarri misses Chelsea trip to Holocaust Memorial in Boston owing to being unwell

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri was unable to join his players on a visit to the Holocaust Memorial in Boston because he was unwell.

Sarri was conspicuous by his absence at the event which was attended by the 23-man squad who have travelled to the United States, staff and chairman Bruce Buck.

The London club have travelled across the Atlantic Ocean to play against New England Revolution in order to raise awareness in the fight against anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination.

Players from Chelsea and the Revs mingled as they listened stories passed down by survivors of the Nazi death camps which inspired the evocative memorial in the centre of Boston.

Sarri stayed in the team hotel, having been prescribed medication for an upset stomach and told to rest by the club doctor.

Next day, he reported he was feeling better and would be able to take his place on the touchline at the Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, on Wednesday.

The match, billed as the 'Final Whistle on Hate', is an initiative of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Revs owner Robert Kraft with proceeds going towards relevant causes.

A million dollars has been donated to the causes by each of the owners.

Sarri risked the wrath of Abramovich when he complained about the charity game interfering with his preparations for the Europa League final, against Arsenal in Baku, in a fortnight.

The Chelsea manager had been scheduled to speak in Boston at a pre-match press conference but was replaced by defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.

Azpilicueta and Alonso took the stage alongside Revs players Michael Mancienne, a former Chelsea player, and Scott Caldwell.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel was sacked as head coach of the New England Revolution a week before the fixture and will be replaced by veteran Bruce Arena.

'Hopefully he can change the situation we are in,' said Mancienne. 'It's been a difficult start to the season. Hopefully with fresh blood and a new perspective we can turn things around and climb the table.'
