Sergio Aguero will be making a return to Spanish football next season in Barcelona shirt, but things could have been very different a decade ago when he came close to joining their eternal rivals Real Madrid.
The Argentine international became a legend at Manchester City and wrote his name in English football history after signing from Atletico Madrid in 2011, but in most transfer sagas there is an avenue not taken that makes you wonder what might have been.
In Aguero's case, Real Madrid were seriously interested in acquiring his services before he ended up at City, but it wasn't to be and now he will be turning out for Barcelona on his return to Spain.
At the time, the striker was keen on the move and was even encouraged by Diego Maradona to cross the Madrid divide, but Los Colchoneros wouldn't entertain selling their star player to Los Blancos and Aguero's destiny was to be in England.
"I can see Kun [Aguero] at Real Madrid," Maradona told MARCA in 2011. "I can see him alongside Ronaldo, breaking the hips of [Gerard] Pique and [Carles] Puyol."
In one of those curiosities of fate, Aguero will only be testing Pique's hips in training.
Real Madrid looked into signing Aguero again in 2018, but they didn't come as close on that occasion and the Argentine signed a new three-year deal with the Citizens.
