While Jurgen Klopp seethed at Atletico Madrid's style of play, Diego Simeone was hailed by the English media for his team's Anfield display.
Los Rojiblancos defended deep but fought with everything to deny Liverpool any sort of edge in the Champions League second leg before coming out on top on the scoreline.
"I don't understand with the quality they have the football they play. They could play proper football but they stand deep and have counter-attacks," Klopp said about Atletico afterwards.
"When I see players like [Marcos] Llorente, Koke, Saul... they could play proper football but they stand deep in their own half and have counter-attacks."
The German coach was criticised for his remarks as the English media praised Simeone's tactical planning.
The Guardian analysed what exactly is meant by 'good football' and whether Klopp was right or not to have a pop at Atletico's style.
Before the tie, most in England had ruled El Cholo and his men out.
Liverpool were running away with the Premier League and many thought their pulsating brand of attacking football, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane up front, would be too much for Atletico's rigid play.
Even after the final result at Anfield, Michael Owen detracted from Simeone's achievement, saying that he wasn't a footballing genius like Pep Guardiola or Klopp on BT Sport because of his defensive tactics.
Owen was ridiculed for failing to recognise the hard work and commitment of Simeone's side.
After all, this is the second time El Cholo has knocked the reigning champions out of the Champions League, having eliminated holders Barcelona in 2015/16.

All over the world knows simeone playing style all clubs knows he's playing defensive style even some places klop state that but now after losing it by 3 with #atm in home he start yelling to his style. He should learned and start playing simeone defensive style but instead of that he starting yelling towards winner #atm. I think this is not good way to come in media and telling like this about simeone and #atm instead of accepting lose. He still want be hero and denying lose.#HomeLoserLFC

Simeone celebrated the 90th min goal which was offside. He realises it was offside and made a hand gesture that he was sorry.... What a classy man!! He truly deserve our respect and appreciation.
