Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has warned Manchester United fans that Elon Musk would be after influence should he launch a bid for the club.

The tech-billionaire is believed to be monitoring Manchester United's ongoing sale closely ahead of Friday’s deadline to submit bids.

Musk is ranked by Forbes as the second-richest in the world and owns Twitter, Tesla and SpaceX.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan claimed Musk would be seeking to further his own influence should he bid for the club and would not necessarily be the owner supporters crave.

'Be careful with Elon Musk, while I think he is a brilliant man, he is after influence,' Jordan said.

Twitter is influence, it is social media and influence in controlling the way people think.

'Owning a football club supplements that way of thinking too.

'Be careful of what you wish for when you get these types of people involved.

'They are not always straight line thinking going behind what they want to do or benefit to others.

'I have always felt it is likely that an American ownership model would come in.'

Must had previously sent Twitter into meltdown when he tweeted that he was going to buy United, before later saying that it was a joke.

Must had posted ‘Also, I'm buying Manchester United ur welcome’ in August, as United planned a protest against the Glazer family ahead of a home clash with Liverpool.

The billionaire had admitted that the Red Devils were his favourite team as a child.

Sportsmail last week revealed that a group of Qatari individuals are set to lodge their own bid.

They are working ‘around the clock’ according to sources and are ‘confident’ that theirs will be the strongest package.

Jordan had previously ridiculed the 'irony' of Manchester United fans celebrating the club's potential takeover by Qatari investors having spent a long time calling to get 'our club back' from the Glazer family.

Britain’s richest man and Manchester United supporter, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has also declared his interest in bidding for the club.
