Despite having a £70million bid for the 26-year old rejected earlier this week, Sir Alex Ferguson wants United to step up their pursuit of Harry Maguire ahead of the new season.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Ferguson believes the Red Devils should have moved for Maguire sooner - despite his involvement with England at the Nations League in June.
It's claimed that Ferguson believes United should be doing all they can to land the Leicester defender.
Indeed, they cannot afford to waste time - especially with Manchester City also interested.
In 2011, Ferguson watched Maguire play for Sheffield United in their FA Youth Cup final defeat against United at Old Trafford and thinks he would be a good fit for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer .
Last summer, sources at the club claimed they would be prepared to part with £100million for their ideal defender, with Raphael Varane of Real Madrid mentioned, but stalled with Leicester slapping a £75million price tag on Maguire.
Since the end of Ferguson's tenure, United have seen three managers and last season recorded their worst defensive performance in the top-flight since 1978-79.
Victor Lindelof is set to start the campaign as first choice, but there remain questions over who will begin the campaign alongside him.
Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe - who signed a new deal on Friday - are all in the mix.
