Sky escape Ofcom sanction following mistranslated interview with Morelos

Sky Sports have escaped punishment from broadcast regulator Ofcom over a Celtic complaint regarding a mistranslated interview with Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

The Parkhead club demanded answers from the broadcaster after subtitles attached to a Sky interview with the Colombian, who spoke in Spanish, wrongly accused Celtic supporters of racial abuse during the meeting of the two clubs on December 29.

Sky reporters were excluded from Celtic press conferences for a time, while Ofcom considered whether to launch a formal complaint.

The regulator has now ruled out a detailed probe, however, because the incorrect translation on February 3 did not air on Sky's broadcast television channel.

Claiming the matter was outwith their remit an Ofcom spokesperson: 'We considered complaints about incorrect English subtitles in an interview on Sky Sports News.

'As the section of the interview with the incorrect translation was shown only on Sky's website and on-demand platforms, and not on its broadcast television channel, we have no grounds to pursue this matter under the Broadcasting Code.'

Ofcom received 72 complaints over the matter including the formal complaint from Celtic which drew a Sky apology for 'inaccuracies' in the interview. It was subsequently removed from all platforms with a corrected version made available.
