Arne Slot spent last week partying in the night-clubs of Ibiza to celebrate winning the Premier League title – but when on the sunbeds his mind was already plotting how to do it again next year.
And the Liverpool boss says his team need some ‘extra weapons’ in his squad to go back-to-back and mount a more serious challenge in the Champions League after their last-16 exit to eventual finalists Paris Saint-Germain.
One of them is already through the door with Bayer Leverkusen wing back Jeremie Frimpong in the country ahead of completing a medical on Monday – he will sign a five-year deal with his €35million release clause triggered – but Slot wants more.
When asked if he plans to evolve to avoid others working out his tactics, Slot said: ‘If I look at the way we think about next season and our squad, these are things that are on my mind. I think we can find one or two extra weapons that this team doesn’t have.
‘Maybe, maybe by using the transfer market. That is what we are trying to achieve. That will only make us stronger. That is what we need because we saw Manchester City spending £200m in the winter transfer window. All of them will.
‘Apart from the transfer window, we can also improve certain aspects ourselves.’
Full back is an area Liverpool will look to upgrade and the right side is already sorted through Frimpong – who scored five goals and made 12 assists this season – plus Conor Bradley, who has been rewarded with a new contract running until 2029, which was penned last week.
They are also targeting a left back and talks to sign Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, worth about £45m, could intensify now the Cherries cannot qualify for Europe. And Liverpool also plan to sign at least one forward with Darwin Nunez expected to leave.
Slot has also spent time reflecting over whether he rotated too much or too little at times, such as playing the B team in an FA Cup defeat to Plymouth, and hopes to have a deeper squad to turn to when needed next season.
And another thing he would change next season is to put pressure on referees to clamp down on time-wasting. He added: ‘I don’t wake up during the night but if I did I might be like, “Shit! There’s no answer to be found to that type of play”.
‘Every time we dropped points, that happened… goalkeepers taking one and a half minutes. I am hoping for the league… Ruben Dias said something about it too which is not always the best moment to say it after dropping points. But for me he was right.
‘Southampton can do what they want but I think we as a league must find an answer. People always tell you the Premier League is so intense, so intense! But there are tactics to slow the game down.’
