Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted in an interview back in August that he would build the Manchester United team around Paul Pogba if he were the club's manager.
The Norwegian, a club legend and baby faced assassin, is currently in his homeland with Molde but United now want him to become caretaker manager following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho on Tuesday.
United are searching for a temporary boss until the end of the season when a move for either Zinedine Zidane or Mauricio Pochettino is then planned.
One of Mourinho's biggest failings was a failure to bring the best out of Pogba, who re-joined the club from Juventus for a staggering £100million in August 2016.
After retiring from football in 2007, Solskjaer stayed on to coach the club's youngsters and very briefly managed Pogba for a short spell before leaving for Norwegian club Molde.
During an interview in August though Solskjaer claimed that if were Mourinho, Pogba would have been the focal point of the United team.
He said: 'I would [build the team around him], absolutely no doubt. I had him with David [Gray] and Etzaz [Hussain] who is playing for me tomorrow.
'That just shows how far the kid has come. Paul is a fantastic kid so hopefully we can build the team around him and keep him.'
Pogba faced a backlash led by former Manchester United defender Gary Neville after reacting to Jose Mourinho's sacking with a controversial Instagram post - which he then deleted 10 minutes later.
Pogba put up a smiling picture of himself and wrote 'caption this' prompting Neville to respond on Twitter: 'You do one as well!' Neville's fellow Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher also weighed in, criticising Pogba, who deleted his post.
France international Pogba has had his problems with Mourinho over the last few months. He was stripped of the vice captaincy over the early months of the season after issues behind the scenes.
And he was also dropped for the match against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
Pogba sat on the bench for the entire 90 minutes as his side lost the game 3-1.

I am not a fan of caretaker coaches. No disrespect to old gunner Solskjaer but this will be a lost opportunity for the permanent boss (Zidane is my guess) to get this team to where they should be. The rest of this season should be used to repair the wrongs caused by Mourinho. A good opportunity to get a relationship between players and manager ready for a fresh start next season. A chance to give some of the youth team players to play in the senior team. A caretaker coach would not be able to progress as well as if you appoint the permanent manager now.

You want to build up Manchester United around Paul Pogba ??? you will only have yourself to blame when you end up like Mourinho except without the 20+ million pounds

No world class coach would want to associate themselves with a team that will drag their reputation down the mud and questioned by idiots from class of 92 who wield more power than the coach and have a negative influence on current players.
