Paul Pogba will remain at Manchester United this season despite lingering interest from Real Madrid, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane claimed the Spanish giants could still make a late move in the transfer market, with the window open for European clubs until Monday.

United have this summer resisted attempts by Pogba and his agent Mino Raiola to engineer a move to the Bernabeu and following his side’s 1-1 draw at Southampton, Solskjaer reassured supporters that the midfielder will be at Old Trafford beyond the end of this window.

'Paul Pogba will be playing for us,' he said.

When asked if Pogba was happy with that, the United boss added: 'I've just said that.'

United were left frustrated at St Mary's after Jannik Vestergaard's second-half goal earned Saints a point after Daniel James opened the scoring.

Following the draw, Pogba was seen limping heavily as he left the stadium. Solskjaer believes he has suffered a twisted ankle but that the injury is not serious.

'He twisted his ankle I think but he'll go away on international duty now and hopefully it's not too bad and he can play for France because I know how much he loves his country and playing for them.'

The midfielder gave the ball away 20 times as United suffered another slip up away from home. They have now won only three games in their last 16 but Solskjaer refused to single Pogba out for criticism, claiming he suffers from inflated expectations.

'I think we as a team after about half an hour started giving sloppy balls away and Paul was one of them. He wasn't any different to anyone else,' he said. ‘I think we as a team didn't play well but of course in the last 20 minutes, half an hour he did create loads for us going forward.'

'Everyone expects everything from him every game. He has to defend. , he has to attack, he has to win headers, he has to win tackles, he has to dribble past people, he has to make passes. That's just Paul and he'll thrive on that.'
