Solskjaer makes Van de Beek prediction after midfielder for vs Southampton

Does Van de Beek have a future at Man United?

Donny van de Beek signed for Man United during the delayed summer window last year, setting the Red Devils back around £35m.

Van de Beek had spent his previous years impressing with Ajax, and at £35m, looked a fairly decent buy for United.

However, despite the midfielder being signed under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s watch, the Norwegian refused to hand the 24-year-old any sort of regular game-time throughout 2020/21.

Van de Beek made 19 Premier League appearances, but just three of those saw him complete 90 minutes – two of which came right at the end of the campaign when United had nothing left to play for.

So, with the summer window open, it has not been all that surprising to see van de Beek’s future at Old Trafford called into question, with Arsenal amongst those who found themselves linked with the midfielder earlier in the window.

Solskjaer on Van de Beek

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also done little to quell the talk that Van de Beek does not have a future at Old Trafford.

So far this season the Norwegian has left the midfielder on the bench for Man United’s 5-1 drubbing of Leeds United and in the draw with Southampton.

Both games had great chances for Van de Beek to earn some minutes. Firstly, Solskjaer could have brought him on towards the end of the Leeds game when the tie was already wrapped up.

And then against Southampton, Fred and Nemanja Matic put in some subpar displays and VDB could have made a decent replacement for one of them, yet Solskjaer left him on the bench.

Despite not handing him a single minute this season though, OGS has, post-Southampton, predicted that Van de Beek will be important for them:

“Whenever you don’t win a game you look at it but I always look at it as much when you win as well.

“What could we have done differently?

“I thought Nemanja [Matic] was excellent, Antho [Martial] was close to scoring a goal but Jadon [Sancho] and Donny will be important for us.”
