Gareth Southgate revealed nothing can get rid of the pain of his Euro 96 semi-final penalty miss despite him managing England to victory over Germany 25 years later.
The Three Lions beat Joachim Low's side 2-0 at Wembley to reach the Euro 2020 quarter-finals thanks to late goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane on Tuesday night.
Southgate missed the crucial penalty for England in the Euro 96 last-four in the same stadium four years ago, with the England boss admitting that the sight of his former England team-mates celebrating Tuesday night's win caused a bit of sadness in him.
The 50-year-old told the BBC: 'I'm just so pleased. I was looking at the big screen and I saw David Seaman up there. The team-mates that played with me, I can't change that, so that's always going to hurt.
'But what's lovely is we've given people another day to remember and now we've got to go and do it in Rome.'
Southgate's England will now face one of Sweden or Ukraine in the quarter-final in the Italian capital on Saturday, with the victor of that clash playing one of Denmark or Czech Republic back at Wembley.
The tournament final is also at the north-west London stadium and Alan Shearer, who was Southgate's team-mate in the Euro 96 squad and ended as England's top scorer, believes the Three Lions do not have a better chance to win a tournament than this summer.
Shearer added: 'The draw is decent I would say. England will never ever ever have a better opportunity of winning the Euros than this opportunity now.
'They're at Wembley, I know they go away for the next game but if they're lucky enough to get to a final that would have been six games at Wembley and you can't ask for any more than that with an atmosphere like this.
'If you could have picked something like that (draw) then you would have. You've got to go on and see what happens.
'We've beaten Germany and we've done it in an impressive way today.'
Meanwhile, Tony Adams, who captained England for the Euro 96 last-four clash against Germany, tweeted that his former centre-back partner Southgate achieved 'redemption' for his spot kick disappointment 25 years ago.
