England manager Gareth Southgate will share his experiences of mental health struggles in a new BBC documentary fronted by Prince William.

A host of famous football stars, including Danny Rose, Thierry Henry and Peter Crouch, joined the Duke of Cambridge to have a frank discussion about depression, racism, career-ending injuries and emotional pressures.

The 'revealing' conversation took place in the locker room of Cambridge United, and focuses on the importance of men's mental health.

In a trailer released on Friday, Southgate can be heard discussing 'that feeling of hopelessness', while Henry says 'it is almost forbidden to cry'.

The documentary, which is called A Royal Team Talk and airs next Sunday, also features Jermaine Jenas, Dan Walker and four football fans.

Explaining the thinking behind the programme, the Duke Of Cambridge - who is the president of the Football Association - said: 'Men are the hardest-to-reach audience on the subject of mental health. Suicide is the biggest killer of young men under the age of 45, and that's an appalling statistic.

'There needs to be a turning point where we can pass the message onto men everywhere that it's OK to talk about mental health. We have to normalise the whole conversation.'

Southgate, who had an 18-year playing career before becoming a manager, said: 'We've got to try to help and support each other. Football generally has had a culture of maybe not opening up about anything in your life, without being seen as being weak for doing that.

'I think it's key that that isn't a weakness, it's actually a strength that you're confident enough to talk about those things openly.'
