Spanish FA to decide on Wednesday whether to punish Osasuna for Greenwood chants

The Spanish Football Federation will decide on Wednesday if they are to punish Osasuna for the death chants directed by their fans towards Mason Greenwood on Sunday.

LaLiga reported the chants, as well as those of Getafe supporters aimed at Osasuna, to the Spanish Federation after Greenwood’s debut.

The Spanish League also reported the chants of ‘Greenwood die’ to Spain’s Anti-violence committee and the state body could also take action although that is likely to be a longer process.

The most recent example of the country’s football federation acting after chants made at one of its top-flight stadiums came last season when Valencia were fined €45,000 (£39,000) and told to partially close one of the stands at their Mestalla ground after racist chanting directed at the Real Madrid player Vinicius.

Sunday’s chant to Greenwood made by a small pocket of visiting supporters at Getafe’s Colliseum were made as he came on 13 minutes from time in Getafe’s 3-2 win.

Greenwood’s arrival into Spanish football has been relatively low-key beyond the excitable reception he has enjoyed at Getafe. Arriving in the middle of the controversy over Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales’ protracted resignation the deadline day signing made few waves.

Although Getafe president Angel Torres was widely criticised for double standards after he demanded Rubiales resign for kissing Spain women’s international Jenni Hermoso, and then just days later agreed to the signing of Greenwood.

But the muted response to Getafe hiring a player who had struggled to find a club in England made the reaction from Osasuna followers all the more surprising on Sunday.

It now remains to be seen how he will be welcomed away from home in the coming weeks. Before the next international break Getafe have three away games travelling to Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao and Celta Vigo.
