Spanish coalition could promote Basque sports teams

The PSOE have reached an agreement with the PNV - The Basque National Party - over the formation of a new Spanish government and their pact could also affect sport.

In the event that the two aforementioned parties form a government along with Podemos, there could be a push for the Basque national teams to take part in international competitions.

The PNV spokesman in Congress, Aitor Esteban, has stressed that such an option could be discussed in the future, as the Basque party have long called for their teams to compete in major competitions.

"It is not that we are going to ask for it, as we have always asked for it," he told RNE.

"If we discuss an area such as the sports law, I'm sure this will come up.

"Another thing is to then move forward with what we propose or not, but it seems to us that it is a majority feeling in Basque society above ideological lines and it is a demand that exists.

"We'll work on the will on the part of the government to open channels to promote international representation, to look for the format of potentially having official international representation.

"We'll see how it all goes, but it's positive that there is a recognition on the part of the government."
