After hosting three NFL games in a fortnight, the Wembley turf has been ravaged ahead of Tottenham's huge clash with Manchester City.
Grounds staff have a mammoth task on their hands to nurse the iconic surface to a playable state with only 24 hours between the Jacksonville Jaguars' defeat by the Philadelphia Eagles and Monday night's Premier League showdown.
The average weight of an NFL player is 17.6 stone. These behemoth's wearing cleats designed to dig into the turf have cut up the pitch and the top layer of green has been worn away down to an ugly brown.
Down the centre of the field, where the line of scrimmage sets down on every play, the damage is at it's worst.
Offensive linemen require the ability to steady themselves and grip the ground to protect their quarterback and the constant twisting, turning and hammering of the field has parts of it looking like a day five Test cricket surface on the subcontinent.
Mooen Ali would be licking his lips at the prospect of bowling into some of the dry areas and footmarks. Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino's slick footballing sides won't be quite as enamoured.
Staff at the national stadium will be working around the clock to not only attempt to revitalise the turf, but also remove the extensive yard markings and huge NFL logo emblazoned where the centre circle will be on Monday evening.
A close inspection shows loose grass and dirt laying on top with distinctive stud marks littering where the pristine green carpet used to be.
The work to repair the damage started almost as soon as the Jaguars' game against the Eagles on Sunday reached a 24-18 conclusion in favour of last season's Superbowl champions.
Wide brushes being dragged behind groundsmen were the first instrument called upon to sweep the more hefty clumps of loose debris off the ground.
No doubt there will be an array of tools used to revive the pitch but it remains to be seen how much of the damage is simply irreparable in 24 hours.
Delays to the construction of Tottenham's new stadium mean that Spurs won't entertain fans in their new home until 2019.
Given the unforeseen extended tenancy at Wembley, they have been forced to slot in around the packed NFL schedule and as a result, have to deal with the lumpy ground to play on.
Jacksonville Jaguars duo Josh Lambo and DJ Chark warned City and Spurs players of what to expect. 'It might be challenging, definitely right after a game, with us guys tearing it up. It'll probably be difficult,' said Chark.
Lambo added: 'It'll be difficult for Pep Guardiola's side to play their style of football (after we've played on the pitch), the way that they want to play.'
Kevin de Bruyne raised concerns about the conditions and the way a slow, uneven surface could hamper his side's football.
'It's going to be difficult. I'm not sure how it's going to be. We hope it will be OK and we can play like we normally do. These games are the most important ones. A big game. We have to go and show our intent to stay on top,' he said.
But Guardiola is keen to ensure the Premier League champions have no excuses and insisted the worn-down Wembley is not a concern.
He allayed fears that the pitch might lead to injuries, 'We have full focus on what we have to do to avoid injuries. When you take care properly and focus, knowing that the pitch may not be in the best question, you have to be ready.
'It is what it is. I'm pretty sure Tottenham have a good greenkeeper. There's no point complaining, we have to adapt.'
Time will tell whether the nips and tucks of Wembley's 24 hour face-lift will render the game a slug-fest or not.

I can't understand if it's goddamn American football why can't they play there sport in America, why do they have to travel to England to Cuase some inconvenience to others wishing to use the field, man city and Tottenham duel is a big game and both clubs are at home, why didn't anyone opted for those idiots to just play in America, Canada or Mexico. this is just bullshit.

I'll be honest bro, I dislike this sport. A LOT. But I realize that there are people who like it and I apologize if I insulted the sport or the American culture.
Not everyone is mammoth size, look at Alvin Kamara, tyreek hill, Antonio brown, Kareem hunt, Sony Michel, drew brees, Russell Wilson, Christian mcaffrey, etc.. you think it’s easy for these players to play against all the mammoth sized players? Soccer it really doesn’t matter your size but when you see these little players breaking tackles and running over the big ones it’s exciting, and there wouldn’t be teams 1-7 and then 8-0 if it were easy just if you were big. Years ago in the Super Bowl a team was losing 28-3 with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and came back and won. People that don’t really watch it wouldn’t appreciate the sport but it’s understandable 15 years ago when I was not watching, I didn’t appreciate soccer (football). But I started watching in 2002 and actually understanding it and fell in love, I became a city fan because they are a lot like my hometown nfl team the New Orleans saints, they use to be shit and fans wore paper bags over their heads to games, then we got a really good manager and quarterback and we are one of the best now. I love my club city and I love my saints, I have nothing but respect to all both sports.

I am not from America and we do not call football a sport played with hands and egg-shaped ball. But for all those americans saying that football players are females, I tell them try and do even half the stuff these "females" do. Even I would have been a great NFL player if I were the size of a grizzly bear. But no matter how good someone is juggling a ball (which is already hard as it is), still it ain't enough to make a good football player.

American Football stupid game played by animals. Look at this pitch, and to think two of the best teams in England will face each other here. The best sport ever the REAL FOOTBALL!

If you lived in America you wouldn’t say this. 95% Americans think “the real football” is a sport played by females in males body. But I love both sports I think your football is beautiful sport. Just please respect other countries sports. This isn’t the nfl fault, it’s Tottenham/FA for not having back up plan, the nfl game was planned long ago. Trust me I don’t want my teams traveling to England to play there. Especially as a city fan now we have to play on that pitch

On such type of ground we can beat any team because...we play on rocky and sandy ground cuz we are poor and cannot afford to play on turf. so no problem for us.

Stadium needs to fund its existence, national team can't play there weekly. They'll take as many events as they can get.

This pitch is crap by NFL standards too half of the NFL plays on natural grass and the field last a whole season without getting this bad

Eric Dier must be looking forward to play on that pitch.

I think a big part of the issue is the Wembley roof only lets in so much natural light. This is why the Arizona Cardinals roll their pitch in and out of their stadium. The Linc is a completely open air stadium. But yeah it still says something because Temple plays there as well as the Eagles.

That would be unbelievably harsh on the groundskeeper, considering how Spurs were never meant to have the stadium so soon after the NFL game, and you're putting impossible conditions on them.

I completely agree that NFL and EPL games shouldn't be played on the same field, but you think this might be a bit of an overreaction?
ssure

Exactly. Wembley's used to running a schedule like it does (minus the extra club football games) with boxing, NFL, concerts, etc, and its never really an issue.

I believe you can normally only register one home stadium in a given season. Spurs got special dispensation to use both Wembley and their new stadium this year, but they can’t use a third.

Especially since compared to a lot of the world outside Europe (and even in Europe), the UK has some of the best public pitches. A lot of people just play on dirt and rocks.

Cant they try with the FA to exclude new WHL for this season as it isn’t ready and include a new stadium? It’s in the FAs interest as well (less chance of injury, Wembley doesn’t get a bad name etc), and have Spurs pay a massive fine because the state of Wembley simply isn’t suited for this level of comp.

NFL fields look better than this after an entire season of games. This looks horrid.

you could the state of the pitch after 10 minutes of the nfl game already! an absolute no go and a disgrace towards the players and the fans... and unworthy for english football in general because england (and especially wembley) is famous for perfect green keeping...

If the pitch is in such poor condition, spurs should be fined, its their "home" pitch all because they hired a bunch of drunks and stoners to build their toilet stadium
