Luis Suarez is set to join Gremio on a two-year contract which will make him the Brazilian club's top earner, according to reports.

Suarez spent the first half of the season back with boyhood team Nacional in Uruguay, where he was building up his fitness ahead of the World Cup after leaving Atletico Madrid.

Yet with his short-term Nacional deal set to expire in the New Year, the former Barcelona and Liverpool striker is now on the hunt for his next club.

Reports previously suggested he would either head to Brazil to sign for Gremio or join Mexican outfit Cruz Azul - and Argentinian journalist Cesar Luis Merlo claims the former have won the race for his signature.

Merlo posted on Twitter on Saturday that Suarez has reached a 'verbal agreement' with Gremio and will put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the club once the final terms are thrashed out.

He is expected to become their highest-paid player, although his exact salary is currently unclear.

The 35-year-old will reunite with old Liverpool team-mate Lucas Leiva, who has spent the last six months back with his boyhood club after leaving Lazio.

Gremio finished second in Brazil's Serie B last season and will begin their state championship campaign on January 21.

Suarez was last in action at the Qatar World Cup, where Uruguay were eliminated at the group stage after failing to win and score in their first two matches.

Their veteran frontman was left in tears after crashing out of the tournament despite a final 2-0 win over Ghana.

Nevertheless, Suarez was delighted to see former Barcelona team-mate and good friend Lionel Messi triumph, FaceTiming the Argentina captain to congratulate him after their win over France last Sunday.
