Sunderland 2-1 Blackburn Rovers: Ellis Simms comes off the bench to score 91st minute winner

The Tony Mowbray finishing school for young footballing talent is flourishing once again.

Two seasons ago, as Blackburn manager, Mowbray helped polish Harvey Elliott into a midfielder capable of establishing himself in the first team at Liverpool.

Last term, it was Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke who finished the campaign as Blackburn's Player of the Season on Mowbray's watch.

Having taken over at Sunderland, Mowbray finds himself presiding over another squad packed with young talent, with loan players from some of the leading clubs in the land, and in Amad Diallo and Ellis Simms, he is confident he is managing two players will go on to star at the highest level.

Amad, who is on a season-long loan from Manchester United, has forced his way into Sunderland's starting side in the last few months and is now a key performer at the Stadium of Light.

Simms, who is spending the season on Wearside on loan from Everton, has been equally as impressive this season, with his stoppage-time winner against Blackburn confirming his goalscoring talent.

Both are set to leave Sunderland in the summer as much better players than when they arrived.

'I think Everton are just happy Ellis is playing football,' said Mowbray, after the striker struck in the first minute of stoppage time to secure all three points. 'It's like Amad and Man United, I think Everton are just happy Ellis is here and playing.

'If you look at what we did at Blackburn, we had Harvey Elliot, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Tosin Adarabioyo, and we helped with their development. I think if clubs send young players on loan, they want to know that they're playing football and improving.

'Amad didn't play a lot of football at Rangers last year, but now he's one of our main players. I'll be rotating him in and out as the games come thick and fast, but he's playing and I'm sure Man United are happy with that. It's the same with Ellis and Everton.

'It's like they're going to school really – you have to teach them about football and playing in all different kinds of games.'

Simms' composed stoppage-time finish settled a game that had earlier seen his fellow Sunderland forward, Ross Stewart, score at either end.

Stewart headed the ball into his own net via a deflection off Dennis Cirkin as he looked to deal with Tyler Morton's free-kick, before making amends at the opposite end four minutes later as he converted from the spot after he had been fouled by John Buckley.

Blackburn's defeat means they have still not drawn a game this season, a remarkable statistic that their manager, Jon-Dahl Tomasson, attributes to the lack of experience within his squad.

'We have to look at the situation,' said Tomasson. 'We were not expected to go up or be favourites. We are working hard to try to improve, and we want to go in the right direction to be a sustainable club over time.

'We have had some great wins and enjoyed them, and overperformed sometimes, but we have underperformed sometimes too. That is because we are so young.'
