Talking points before FA Cup replays: Spurs NEED to prove they're Mourinho team

  /  autty

While managers will say they could do without a extra game, that their priorities lay elsewhere, nobody will want to miss out on a spot in the FA Cup fourth round.

For those who could not get it done at the first time of asking, this week brings a second opportunity and for Jose Mourinho he needs to end Tottenham's four-match run without a win now. Losing to Middlesbrough at home and getting knocked out of the FA Cup would be a disaster.

There are other sub-plots, too. Rochdale make the long trip up to Newcastle, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be keeping an eye on Shrewsbury-Bristol City while League One Tranmere, who fought back from 3-0 down to force a replay with Watford, are ready to finish the job at home.

Sportsmail looks at five key talking points ahead of the latest FA Cup replays.

Can Tottenham show they are REALLY a Mourinho team?

Mourinho loves a cup competition. He is a master in delivering trophies wherever he has been.

And so Tuesday night brings immense significance to himself, his appointment and his group of players at Tottenham.

He is a master of creating a siege mentality, an 'us v them' mantra and he will need to conjure up everything in his power to get his injury-hit squad over the line.

Had Giovani Lo Celso put in that chance - still unsure how he missed - against Liverpool, they would have had a point and a platform from which to build. But instead it was a loss and it is now four games without a win for Spurs.

Christian Eriksen will reportedly play, despite appearing to be on the verge of a move to Inter Milan. There is no Harry Kane to bail them out, as he so often has over the years, and suddenly this striker-less side need to get creative in attack.

The FA Cup proved elusive during his time at Manchester United and that too will act as an added incentive to Mourinho.

Mourinho's style, a marked shift from what predecessor Mauricio Pochettino showed, has drawn plenty of criticism already with Jamie Caragher insistent that the club has gone BACKWARDS under him.

'Pochettino was one or two players away I think from winning the league,' Carragher said on Sky Sports.

'Jose Mourinho has got now, if he wants to play the way he wants to play, which is not the way these players are used to playing, he needs four or five players just to get back to where Pochettino was.'

Lose to Middlesbrough and the surly Mourinho that we saw at the end of his days at Old Trafford could snap back into life.

Danny Rose hailed his boss as a 'serial winner' and 25 career trophies would back up that claim.

But the honeymoon period would be well and truly over if his side fall flat in their next 90 minutes. It has the feeling of a defining moment for Mourinho at Spurs.

Rochdale's recent FA Cup record puts Newcastle to shame

The fact Rochdale have reached the FA Cup fourth round more times than Newcastle in the last six seasons says it all. When it comes to this competition, the Magpies are horrendously back, or horrendously consistent if the glass is half full.

Should Rochdale, sat 18th in League One currently, run the show at St James' Park and progress, Steve Bruce and his players are in for a world of pain.

Not since 1954-55 have Newcastle gone on the lift the FA Cup and while they have exceeded pre-season expectations in the league, fans want to dream of tangible success, a trophy to show off.

Stuttering past Rochdale is not exactly a good start but the alternative will be far more haunting.

Will Joelinton FINALLY catch fire for Newcastle?

Whichever way you look at it, there is no sugar-coating one goal in 23 appearances when you cost a club record £40million.

The Brazilian's barren run has seen him come in for scathing criticism and if he draws a blank against Rochdale AGAIN - having flopped in their first meeting - he may need a police escort out of the ground,

'A tap-in would be nice. Who knows? It might be Joelinton's night in the FA Cup,' Bruce said without much conviction in the build-up.

'It can kick-start him. As I said about Miguel Almiron, he just needed a goal to get off and running. Now he's got three in six games. Fair play to him.'

Almiron is, in fairness, a good example that Joelinton can look to. He has not been lacking support from management but sooner or later he has to give something back - or risk being one of the worst No 9s to ever represent the club.

Jurgen Klopp will be thinking about New Meadow

Liverpool have plenty on their plate as it is.

They navigated the Club World Cup, won that. Dispatched Everton in an FA Cup Merseyside derby, are still unbeaten and 14 points clear with a game in hand in the Premier League. And yet there will be no doubt that Jurgen Klopp will be keeping a close eye on developments at New Meadow on Tuesday night.

That is not because the German has an appetite for lower-league cup replays. The winner will host Klopp and his players in round four and so Tuesday night will act as something of a scouting mission for Liverpool.

If Liverpool are in it, they will do all they can to win it. A historical season beckons.

Tranmere look to finish the job... after coming back from the dead

Even the most optimistic Tranmere Rovers fan must have thought their 2019-20 FA Cup campaign had run its course.

With over an hour gone at Vicarage Road 10 days ago, Watford were 3-0 and seemingly in cruise control against a side two divisions below them. But the FA Cup has a funny way of retaining the magic.

Like Tyson Fury emerging off the canvas following his knockdown by Deontay Wilder in their first fight, Tranmere came back from the dead to sensationally force a replay - now they will want to finish the job.

It was a heavily rotated side by Watford on that occasion and with his priorities all in on staying in the Premier League, expect Nigel Pearson to shuffle his pack again... only this time he may pay a bigger price.
