Tammy Abraham was denied the chance to get on the score sheet in Chelsea's thrashing of Crystal Palace after Cesar Azpilicueta prevented him from taking a penalty.
With the hosts already leading three-nil after goals from Ben Chilwell, Kurt Zouma and a spot kick from Jorginho, Chelsea were handed a golden opportunity to pile on the misery from 12 yards again in the second half.
Abraham, who has netted two goals this season, was caught on camera pleading to be given shooting duties - but captain Azpilicueta took charge and handed the ball to Jorginho once again.
The silky Italian midfielder is Chelsea's usual spot-kick taker and had netted from the same position just moments before to add gloss to the handsome scoreline. It was a foul on Abraham that resulted in the home side being handed the set piece.
And in his attempts to get in on the act, Abraham wanted the second penalty all for himself. Kai Havertz was felled in the area, sparking a bizarre row between the striker and a couple of his team-mates.
Azpilicueta was forced to physically drag Abraham away from the situation, with the clearly unhappy 23-year-old then walking off with his head bowed.
Jorginho coolly converted once again, firing to Vicente Guaita's right, to round off the scoring in west London.
While his team-mates celebrated a superb result, Abraham was unable to even muster a smile after being denied the chance to step up and boost his own confidence.
Abraham was soon widely panned on social media for his sulky antics. One user described him as 'pathetic' and warned that similar incidents 'disrupt team harmony.'
A second wrote: 'Embarrassing. The designated penalty taker takes the penalties. Simple.'
Another said: 'Class from Azpilicueta to be fair, as a captain that's what you want.'
BT Sport pundit Joe Cole praised the quick actions of Azpilicueta and hailed a superb performance from the Champions League hopefuls.
He said: 'I think it’s great from Azpilicueta there. You don’t want two players fighting over penalties when you are 4-0 up. It's professionalism isn’t it?
'Jorginho steps up, dispatches it like he always does. It's great Tammy and Timo are hungry and want to get on the scoresheet but there is no need to sour a great performance.
'They all did the right thing. Chelsea scored, won 4-0 and it’s a great day.'
Chelsea returned to winning ways at Stamford Bridge after suffering defeat to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup and being held to a draw at West Brom in the league last weekend.
Ben Chilwell netted his maiden goal for his new club after pouncing on a mistake from Mamadou Sakho. The left back was able to hammer a left-footed strike beyond Guaita.
Despite splashing the cash on an array of star-studded attackers this summer, it was another defender who netted next for Chelsea. Kurt Zouma rose highest inside the box to meet Chilwell's delivery and crash home a header.

i think if Timo Werner was allowed to be taking penalties for us,he wouldn't be struggling to score because,he would have enough confidence,I don't even like the jorginho stair of taking the penalty, brave shortstops like Ederson,Baker&Ter stegen have shown the can handle such cases, his kick always lacks strength, no magnitude on the short, guys I think it would be good if Timo Werner takes penalties for us

It's normal- of course Tammy wanted a goal, hes our striker! I would be disappointed if he didnt want to take it! And besides, Tammy wasnt sulking, All Football is exaggerating, obviously he joined in with the celebrations! Really, theres nothing to worry about

Tammy acted very poorly, you don't just jump for penality like that when you know are not the one responsible for that

Imagine Abraham pleaded with Ramos. Next day:: Abraham is injured for the whole season

I get that Jorginho is the usual penalty taker for Chelsea but when they're 3-0 up I think he can afford to let Abraham take one and maybe boost his confidence... it's just my opinion...🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️

I knew the papers would pick this story up. Think about it this way, as a striker what's the main instinct you have every game and desire? to score. So tensions probably went high cos the player was upset with himself for not having a chance to bury one. He even nearly scored off of a header in the game. Please understand his frustration and also this is a good situation not a bad one as the media will paint it. Not only does it show the desire of our number 9 to score but also the ability of our captain who has been questionable in these situations in the past. Today I'm proud of both. Azpi put in a solid performance and Abraham played entirely for the team and deserved a goal himself. I dont want a small situation to undo such a dominating performance but that's what the papers want so be smart in your reaction to this situation cos it's nowhere near the Kepa situation which was ridiculous, this was solved.

But to be honest Abraham kinda has a point, Jorginho should have at least given him one

I remember a similar situation btw neymar and cavani and the world was against neymar, even though he was on penalty duties and jorginohas already scored, he should have given it to Tammy.

no! cheap talk. so far Jorginho has done very well on penalties. the style does not matter; what matters is to see the ball in the net. mind you it's not easy thing scoring a penalty. ask the 'great' players that have missed penalties b4! Jorginho is the best penalty taker we have! let's speak football⚽, not feelings.

appreciate what we have J5 has a far better penalty record than Werner and since he's been taken it he has only lost once for Chelsea against Alison

guys tbh jorginho should and must be the penalty taker that shows the difference between top class side and low class side there must be a designated penalty taker always and one alternative that's it not everyone can come and score yep I agree that 3-0 and the pressure has eased up ok Crystal Palace but even though if Abraham would have missed then many people would have trolled him and Jorginho is doing a wonderful job of scoring from penalties , yeah at times he misses but he is a specialist in penalties so instead of dropping some GD's (which could be useful at the end of PL)use every opportunity that comes , and this is coming from a Barca fan and Chelsea r doing a wonderful job reinforcing this side into a world class team so I respect Azpi as a Cap wt he did was right😎😎😎😇😇hope Chelsea wins some trophies as this team is overhyped this season

who cares about your perspective, he scored 10 out of 11 and you don't think he is a good penalty taker? Timo didn't even take it against Tottenham in the penalty shootout

you're fake Chelsea fan.... CR7 is a penalty taker in Juv, Messi in Barcelona, Bruno United.... secondly Chelsea were not 5 up to nil.... last season we came fourth because of goal difference to united
