Manchester United’s first mid-season friendly during their week-long camp in Spain ended in a 4-2 defeat to locals Cadiz.
The La Liga strugglers went 2-0 up before Anthony Martial dinked home a panenka penalty to reduce the deficit by half-time. The tourists drew level shortly after the break when Kobbie Mainoo’s deflected effort found the net.
But experience proved the difference against a youth-packed second-half side, Erik ten Hag making ten outfield changes from the first period. Cadiz responded with two goals to restore their two-goal cushion and take home the win.
United next take on Real Betis on Saturday, but here are three moments fans may have missed in the defeat to Cadiz on Wednesday evening:
It might have been a friendly but it didn't stop Ten Hag and opposite number Sergio Gonzalez exchanging a few frosty words. Ivan Alejo was brought down by Anthony Elanga in the centre of the park, prompting the referee to low for a free-kick early in the first half.
The United boss felt the wing-back went down too easily and rather feigned the severity of the challenge. He protested to the referee before having a short but heated argument with Sergio, all of which was over within a matter of moments.
Exciting academy prospect Shola Shoretire began the second half and showed some promising touches during his 45-minute outing. As well as some neat link-up play, he wasn’t afraid to show some skill too.
Not long after the restart, he latched onto the ball mid-air and while stretching out his foot behind him played the ball on with the outside of his boot to beat his man. Shoretire was in the thick of the action in the second half, drawing many a foul after outwitting his opponent.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka started his first game since pre-season as he was presented with a rare opportunity to push his way back into Ten Hag’s plans. There were no signs of a lack of confidence in his play, though, despite only having four minutes of competitive game time all season.
Midway through the first-half, the defender found himself high up the pitch and sold the Cadiz full-back with a no-look pass onto the overlapping winger, only for him to overhit the cross. Otherwise, it was a less than notable outing.
