Ter Stegen's journey

A lot has happened since Marc-Andre ter Stegen last played in a Copa del Rey final.

The last time was the 2015/16 season, when Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-0 after extra time to lift the famous old trophy.

But at that point Ter Stegen wasn't first-choice gloveman at the Camp Nou, with then boss Luis Enrique splitting goalkeeping duties between Claudio Bravo, who played in LaLiga Santander, and Ter Stegen, who turned out in the cup competitions.

This of course meant that Ter Stegen was in goal when the club won their last Champions League title back in 2015.

After the 2015/16 season, however, Ter Stegen became Barcelona's undisputed No.1 - and it has been that way ever since.

That's despite Ronald Koeman giving Brazilian back-up goalkeeper Neto a chance on a number of occasions this season, with six league appearances and five in the cups.

Notwithstanding, Ter Stegen is a dead cert to start this weekend's Copa del Rey final against Athletic Club at the Estadio de la Cartuja in Seville.

And if the German looks back to that era when he arrived at the club, he will no doubt see his own evolution.

Back then - even though he gave some spectacular displays - he was a quiet figure, often in the shade of the Barcelona dressing room's bigger stars.

But now he is a captain of the side in all but name, and someone who drives the team forward.

And he'll hope to add another trophy to his already shimmering Barcelona résumé on Saturday.
