Terry: Tuchel appears to be targeting Spence; he wouldn't dare do that to Alexander-Arnold

Former England and Chelsea captain John Terry has accused Tuchel of targeting Tottenham full-back Spence at this summer's FIFA World Cup.

Tuchel was constantly berating Spence from the sidelines during all four of England's matches in the tournament, two of which the Tottenham full-back started. While the entire England defence looked nervous at times, the German coach consistently singled out the 25-year-old for criticism, and the approach seemed somewhat unfair.

Terry expressed his concerns on Piers Morgan's "World Cup Uncensored" show about Tuchel's handling of Spence and other less experienced players in the squad. He insisted that Tuchel would not dare treat bigger-name players in the same way.

Tuchel controversially left Alexander-Arnold, Palmer, and Foden out of this tournament's squad for reasons of squad harmony. But with Reece James and Livramento both injured, Tuchel's decision not to call up the former Liverpool player now increasingly looks like an oversight.

"I don't know if you saw the video and footage of him having another meltdown at Spence during the match against DR Congo," Terry said. "I'm not saying he's targeting him, but he certainly seemed to be really going after him."

"I'm a little concerned," the former England captain continued. "If that had been Alexander-Arnold, I'm not sure he would have done that. I'm not sure he would have spoken to Alexander-Arnold like that."

"Perhaps that is why he did not pick some of those players," Terry speculated, "because he can treat these younger or newer players in this manner."
