According to The Guardian, Howe would be open to considering the Manchester United job if the club decides to sack Carrick. The former Newcastle United manager is reportedly the preferred candidate of Manchester United's football director Jason Wilcox, and initial contact has reportedly been made between the parties.

Carrick has faced increased pressure recently after Manchester United's consecutive Premier League losses to AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea. Despite growing calls for a change in management, the club's hierarchy has so far decided to keep him in charge.

It is understood that Manchester United's board has not yet agreed on Carrick's successor, which has delayed the club's decision on his future. Club insiders have privately agreed to give Carrick more time for now, with an assessment of whether a change of manager is necessary to be made after the November international break.

Howe is willing to consider taking over Manchester United, but the final appointment will depend on the outcome of negotiations between both parties. Additionally, Manchester United would need to pay Newcastle United approximately Β£3 million in compensation to hire the manager.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's recruitment director Christopher Vivell greatly admires Nagelsmann. The German coach has previously managed the German national team and Bayern Munich. Vivell has reportedly contacted his compatriot to gauge his interest in taking the Manchester United job. The two previously worked together at RB Leipzig.

However, some within Manchester United still believe Carrick is capable of turning the team's fortunes around. After Saturday's 2-0 away defeat to Chelsea, the 45-year-old manager still received support from the travelling fans.
