Following the purchase of Everton, more and more English football clubs are now owned by American companies or owners.
The Premier League continues to expand internationally, with the United States being one of the main markets and where more and more fans in North America are beginning to identify with English football teams.
The Friedkin Group announced on Thursday that it had purchased 94% of Everton, joining a growing list of American owners in English football.
The arrival of the Friedkin Group in the Premier League increases the number of American-owned teams in the Premier League to ten, which represents half of the league under American control, something that three decades ago when it was founded was practically unthinkable.
Furthermore, in the Championship, teams like Leeds, owned by the San Francisco 49ers, Larry Nance Jr and Will Ferrell, among others, also have American ownership in their ranks, further increasing the North American presence in England.
Which Premier League clubs have American owners?
Chelsea
Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital arrived at the London club a couple of years ago and since then, according to 2023 data from Sportico, the London team made $661 million in profits.
Arsenal
The owner of the Denver Nuggets has also had a stake in Arsenal since 2011, since which year he has tried to build one of the most powerful teams in the Premier League, but he has yet to take that step, the value of 2023 in terms of earnings exceeded $600 million.
Liverpool
Fenway Sports Group was close to selling Liverpool, however, the group that LeBron James belongs to remains at the helm of the Reds and has led the Merseyside club to profits of $766 million in the last year.
Manchester United
The Red Devils have had a major change in ownership as the Glazer family sold a share of the team to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, thus sharing the management of the club which has earned $836 million in profits in the last year.
Aston Villa
Aston Villa, owned by Wesley Edens since 2018, has also begun to have success and this is reflected on the pitch with the project led by Unai Emery. Away from the on-field exploits, the team has generated $281 million in profits.
Bournemouth
Bill Foley arrived at Bournemouth a couple of years ago and has been another case of sporting success. With Andoni Iraola as coach and a team that pleases the eye on a regular basis, the Cherries increased their earnings to $182 million over the past 12 months.
Crystal Palace
John Textor, Josh Harris and David Blitzer have been with Crystal Palace for over a decade, but unlike other clubs, they have struggled to make a name for themselves in the sporting arena. However, financially speaking, the club is in a solid position and has generated over $200 million.
Fulham
The Cottagers have also created an interesting project, which has taken more than a decade to consolidate under the leadership of Shahid Khan. Under Marco Da Silva this season the side have hugely impressed in the Premier League, while in economic terms they have raised more than $200 million in total.
Ipswich Town
Finally, Ipswich Town, owned by ORG, BPSP and Avenue Sports, has done quite a bit in three years, including sealing an unlikely promotion to the Premier League playing intense, swashbuckling football. However, over the last year, it is the team that has generated the least amount of profit with just $28 million made.
