Not even Zinedine Zidane can lift up this Real Madrid side. The coach probably sensed it himself when he agreed to return at this stage of the season, but it was confirmed on sunday night with another poor performance.
Madrid have lost 16 matches in all competitions this season and they are equal the 16 defeats from 2008/09, the last year before Florentino Perez returned as president. In LaLiga Santander, they have lost ten games, 8 more than Barcelona.Madrid are heading towards a blank year, having no silverware to play for, with their worst numbers in a long time.Madrid lacked what they have been missing all season: good football, intensity and goals. Their goal difference in LaLiga Santander is their worst since the 2006/07 campaign, a year where they interestingly won the title, though that side was built around the defence and this team is not close in that regard.
When that is compared to the Cristiano Ronaldo era, the difference is alarming. Madrid recorded a positive difference of 43 in 2017/18, 51 in 2016/17, 59 in 2015/16, 62 in la 2014/15, 49 in 2013/14, 48 in 2012/13, 73 in 2011/12, 47 in 2010/11, and 57 in 2009/10. It has been a long time, a reflection of the season Madrid have had to this point.

This season is bad, real bad and weird, like we beat Roma and lose against CSKA, we are having the worst season in the last decade but jumped from 9th to 3rd, lost all the trophies in a week but also got Zidane back This is the worst and weirdest season

Zidane in - brings back key players from last seasons - some of them do well, some still don't. He loses his first match after making 7 changes and clearly testing players in terms of who will stay and who gets sold next season. An overhaul of some players was needed some time ago, and would've happened last summer if they hadn't won the CL. A disastrous season was a given after Ronaldo left and didn't get a proper replacement (that's on Florentino), because he was the one covering up everything we've witnessed this past season, coupled with their lack of motivation.

Florentino didn't think it was important enough to replace Ronaldo with a decent 'killer' as they say, a goalscorer in the same vein, and ended up with Mariano. Lopetegui was not a good coach in terms of tactics and or style, it certainly didn't fit a team that had played for Ronaldo for so many years. Maybe time would've been key to implement something, but it was a downward spiral with him. In comes Solari, who did well in the beginning, certainly brought the team back into top 3... Completely isolated star players and brought in new life with younger players and Vinicius of course. Isco, Bale, Marcelo, Keylor etc, all frozen out. Great if you keep winning, horrible if you start losing, 2 times to Barcelona once against Ajax, get eliminated from Cup, Champions and fall further behind in the league in 1 horrible week.

What can I say? Simply the best in football's history. The GOAT.

Real Madrid hid a lot of weaknesses and mistakes with goals... Goals that, of course, came mainly through Ronaldo, as the spearhead of the Real Madrid attack. There were clear signs of it last season, where they were in abysmal form domestically - if they hadn't won the CL through miraculous black magic, the disastrous season would've been the last one. Instead, the CL win helped to cover up everything, with the difference of Ronaldo and Zidane leaving. Tbh I think Ronaldo could smell it coming, just like Zidane who clearly stated he didn't think he could motivate the team to win any longer.

I do get why did they let him go? Even if wanted to go why didn’t Perez go buy someone who can score goals?

The same thing is going to happen to you when Messi leaves/retires.

Why the hell did Flo think we would be fine without crazy signings to replace anything near Ronaldo's output.

We have never lost this much in the league since 2008/2009, the year before Ronaldo joined us. While he was here we never lost more than 6 games in the league in a season. Now we are already at 9 with 8 games to go. Additionally Bale and Benzema have scored a combined 4 goals against top 10 in La Liga.

I guess those 50 goals per season were indeed missed.

As the famous saying goes; Men lie, women lie but numbers don't. Ronaldo was not only influential with goals and assists but also in giving his team the fear factor that would stifle opposing teams.
