The history between Chelsea vs Brighton

With the help of club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton, we look back on some past encounters with today's opponents...

We Have History

Chelsea and Brighton meet this evening for only for the eighth occasion in the league (fourth in the top flight) and 12th overall.

The Blues have a 100 per cent record in the league and overall we have won nine of the 11 encounters in all competitions. The seven wins out of seven league games is the best current run of any team against another apart from Wimbledon versus Bournemouth (eight from eight).

The Londoners have won the last nine against the Seagulls in all competitions, scoring 20 goals and conceding twice.

This has only been a league fixture since New Year's Eve 1983 (pictured above), when a cold and windy morning kick-off in Division Two was decided by David Speedie's late finish after strike-partner Kerry Dixon's flick.

Former Liverpool enforcer Jimmy Case was sent off for tangling with Blues midfielder Tony McAndrew, and Kerry Dixon missed a penalty for the third time in two matches. Chelsea earned promotion at the end of that season.

The only previous Premier League meeting came 34 years later on Boxing Day 2017. The champions failed to find a clearing through Albion’s dense defence until Cesar Azpilicueta picked out the head of Alvaro Morata moments after the interval. Marcos Alonso nipped in at the near post to complete the scoring in a 2-0 win. Enjoy the highlights here.

BLUE NOTES

An early Roberto Di Matteo goal from a goalmouth scramble at Charlton on 3 April 1999 kept the Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finalists’ Premiership title challenge alive. The Blues would finish third, four points shy of Man United.

Brighton’s only victory against the Blues was in the third round of the FA Cup in 1932/33. George Barber scored for the Pensioners’ in a 1-2 defeat.
