Time for Pep Guardiola to twist rather than stick as Man City chase down Arsenal

Pep Guardiola doesn't come in for much critcism from Manchester City fans.

After all, the Spaniard's legacy is already guaranteed whenever he leaves the Etihad behind thanks to a boat-load of trophy wins in his hugely successful tenure.

But now and again the City faithful do have the odd gripe with their manager. And there was a blindingly obvious one on Saturday in their final game before the World Cup break.

Guardiola opted to deploy just one of five permitted substitutes, despite his side chasing a much-needed win over Brentford to keep pace with Premier League leaders Arsenal. Julian Alvarez was the only player summoned from the bench, although even his introduction took until the 87th minute.

It meant the likes of Jack Grealish, Riyad Mahrez and Cole Palmer remained rooted to the plush Etihad seats pitchside.

Justifying his decision, Guardiola said afterwards that he placed enough trust in the XI he chose to start the game: "I thought a lot (about changes), but the guys who were on the pitch had a feeling they had the sense of goal."

Unfortunately that gamble did not pay off and despite Alvarez's arrival the Bees would go on to pinch the points late on. Some City fans point to the lack of changes as being key to the result. Some have suggested stubbornness got the better of Guardiola. Perhaps.

But this was far from a one-off. It has become the norm for City to make only one or two changes in league games, despite being one of the teams pushing for the permanent change from three to five permitted substitutes per game.

They made one alteration in their previous defeat - to Liverpool last month - despite chasing the game after conceding inside the last quarter-of-an-hour.

The only time Guardiola has used up all five subs has been when opponents have been out of sight. The thumping derby win over Manchester United immediately springs to mind.

Given they have arguably the strongest squad in the top flight Guardiola is at risk of cutting his nose off to spite his face. Granted, there is no guarantee that had he brought on fresh blood from the bench against Brentford that they would have won or indeed avoided defeat.

But the majority of City fans would at least have liked to have seen the question asked.
