Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams defended his decision to wear a 'groovy' velvet suit in the BT Sport studio on Saturday night.

Adams was on a panel of pundits to cover Arsenal's 3-0 win at Blackpool in the FA Cup third round.

Chris Willock was the star man on the pitch with two goals, but it was Adams who really caught the eye of viewers with his loud choice of evening wear.

BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey asked Adams about his suit after multiple viewers had sent tweets to him.

'It's velvet and it's groovy,' said Adams with a smile on his face.

Humphrey replied: 'It's a great suit.' And Adams continued: 'Thanks mate. I've got a new tailor... I won't give him a plug!'

The suit got a lot of attention online. Ladbrokes likened it to a garment comically worn by actor Steve Coogan at the 2013 movie premiere of 'Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa'.

Another Twitter user compared it to the suit stuffed character 'Walter' wore in the 2011 film 'The Muppets'.

And Gary Lineker, a former England team-mate of Adams, joked: 'I'll be surprised if Tony Adams' suit doesn't have its own Twitter account by the final whistle.'

Within less than an hour Lineker's tweet had attracted replies from two parody accounts dedicated to the suit.
