Jose Mourinho is set to make a summer bid for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, according to reports in Italy.
Smalling has impressed during a season-long loan spell at Roma but is yet to agree a permanent move to the club as the Serie A side haggle over his transfer fee.
The Daily Express claim Roma want to pay £14 million for Smalling in order to ensure they don't breach Financial Fair Play rules but United are holding out for £17m.
If the two clubs fail to agree a deal then Tuttosport report Tottenham are ready to steal a march and bring him back to the Premier League.
Mourinho worked with Smalling during his three years in charge at Old Trafford and believes he could be the man to firm up his rearguard.

.It seems Mourinho is confused and has lost his touch. He was the same person who was claiming he had no defence in his last season at Man Utd even in the presence of smalling and was rather seeking for Totenham's Alderweird or Maguire. Accusing the board of not buying those defenders for him. Now he wants Smalling at the club where he 6 has Alderweird.
