This week, Tottenham's attacking midfielder Nile John is under the spotlight...
WHAT’S HE GOT?
John produced a mature display in a recent Premier League 2 game. Skilful on the ball with boundless energy, he harried the opposition midfield and showed great decision-making.
Only 5ft 8in, he was not overawed, winning tackles and spiralling out of confrontations in possession.
He is quick enough to get away from bigger players while retaining the ball.
Well-balanced, he moves smoothly and was the hub of his team’s attacking moves into the middle third.
Right-footed, he finished this game with a high percentage of accurate passes. I first saw him two years ago as a flank player but coaching staff have managed his strengths intelligently. He can get away from his marker with a quick turn, and causes danger by engaging defenders.
The ability to spot a pass and dispatch it quickly is a real gift. His skills have been knitted together with his work-rate and pace, and his dribbling is used to good effect.
WHAT DOES HE NEED?
Maybe he should look more for personal goal attempts. Attacking midfield players need goals. But at present he is on the right path to be an exciting and talented player at a high grade.
