Andros Townsend hit back at a supporter who criticised his decision not to celebrate after scoring for Crystal Palace in their FA Cup win over Tottenham.

The winger grabbed the Eagles' final goal from the penalty spot in a 2-0 victory over the club he joined aged eight and played 93 times for before departing in 2016.

Although this is a common gesture among players returning to former clubs, one Twitter user took particular umbrage at Townsend's decision.

He said: 'Andros Townsend played 50 times in 7 years (last time 3 years ago). They loaned him out 9 times. He just scored against them for Crystal Palace. He Didn’t celebrate. Have a word with yourself.'

Townsend responded: 'Try 93 games and being there for 16 years from the age of 8 till 24.... it’s called a bit of respect to the club that made me mate.'

Having joined the club's youth system in 2000, the Leytonstone-born winger progressed to Spurs' first team and scored on his debut in an FA Cup third round tie against Charlton in January 2011.

This was to be one o 93 appearances for the club, making his full breakthrough in the 2013/14 season.

He also made his England debut in 2013 while at the club and has 13 caps and three goals to date for his country.
