Andros Townsend has jumped to the defence of Ashley Young on Monday after the Manchester United player was mocked by Crystal Palace for his efforts to tackle Wilfried Zaha.
Palace's official Twitter account shared a clip from the game at Old Trafford that showed Zaha tying Young up in knots on the right side before the veteran defender eventually got back into position and blocked the cross.
Unhappy with his club's mocking of Young, Townsend replied to the tweet on Monday and launched a passionate defence of the United player.
He wrote: 'A 34 y/o (year-old) ex winger vs one of the leagues best wingers.... he gets destroyed twice yet still manages to block the cross.... we should be applauding this not making fun of it #respect'.
Young initially started the game on the bench but was forced into action when Luke Shaw pulled up with an injury on the left side of defence.
Palace went on to claim a surprise victory at Old Trafford with Patrick Van Aanholt scoring a stoppage time winner for the Eagles.
Daniel James appeared to have salvaged a point for United with just a minute of regular time remaining, but United could not see the game out and Van Aanholt earned Palace a first league win at Old Trafford in 30 years as he finished off a swift counter-attack three minutes into time added on.
The late drama came after Marcus Rashford missed a 70th-minute penalty, having taken over spot-kick duties from Paul Pogba, who also missed a penalty in Monday's 1-1 draw at Wolves
Palace's social media faux pas came on the back of United putting their foot in it before Saturday's match.
After announcing the United team for the game, the club's Twitter account used the hashtag #MUNCHE referring to Chelsea.
When they had noticed the error and rather than delete it, United staff tweeted: '*MUNCRY. Wish we were playing Chelsea again, though...'.
United started their Premier League season with a thumping 4-0 win over Frank Lampard's side at Old Trafford.

even the greatest defenders get twisted..the most important thing is recovery...young recovered well to block the cross.. same thing I used to admire about Ashley Cole.. no matter how many times you dribble him , you never get past him cos he recovers well.. United fans throw stick at loyal players and praise the lazy ones.. the more the do this just to get their transfer wishes , the more the club suffers.. they pushed Rooney out for two lazy players in Mata and pogba and none of the two have justified themselves till now..they forces smallings and Jones to be benched still United isn't improving... now they go for lingard to get their Bruno fernandes wishes.. isn't it on vious that pogba is the main problem.. he is supposed to be the glue in the squad but he isn't and the more he ponders on the ball ,the more the team suffers..United needs a non ponderous creative midfielder like David Silva, even Fernandinho..
