Trevoh Chalobah makes Mauricio Pochettino promise as Chelsea await £34.6m transfer ultimatum

Trevoh Chalobah faced an uncertain future at Chelsea only last month, but now he's expected to play a major role for Mauricio Pochettino this season

Trevoh Chalobah has described the responsibility of wearing the captain's armband for Chelsea as an 'honour'. The 24-year-old defender was heavily linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge at the start of the summer, with Inter Milan eager to secure his signature.

With the European Championships next year, he wants to challenge for a place in the England squad, so game time has always been a priority. Following the return of Levi Colwill from loan, Chalobah seemed to fall down the pecking order, with another defender blocking his pathway into the first-team.

If the £34.6million-rated defender were to join Inter then Chelsea would be left with just three centre-half options. Desperate to hold onto Chalobah and save some money on a new signing, Pochettino displayed his faith in the 23-year-old by handing him the armband in a pre-season friendly against Wrexham.

After the game, Chalobah expressed his delight at the gesture on social media. On Twitter and Instagram, he posted: "An honour to captain my boyhood club. Ready for the next one!"

Despite links to Inter, Chalobah's message suggests that he has no intention or plan to leave Chelsea any time soon. Holding onto the versatile defender would be a great piece of business for the Blues as Pochettino looks to lay the foundations of his project with exciting homegrown talent.
