Tyrell Malacia explains why he was dropped by Manchester United

Tyrell Malacia admitted his rough patch in October led to him losing his place in the Manchester United line-up.

The Dutchman, who was Erik ten Hag’s first signing as Reds boss, had usurped Luke Shaw at left-back after the club’s opening two losses.

But a worrying outing in October’s 6-3 loss to Manchester City, coupled by a mistake that led to Europa League minnows Omonia of Cyprus taking a shock lead against United days later, saw him axed.

Malacia admitted he was not up to the required standard at the time so had to work to reclaim game time. He was benched for the next five Premier League games, his first start back coming at right-back against Fulham due to Diogo Dalot’s suspension.

"I just didn't play well [against City]. In the next match I had a small mistake. Then the trainer has to make choices,” Malacia said. "I just have to make sure that I train well, I did that. [Ten Hag] also said to me.

“I am happy that I can now stand there again. I know myself well, I know what is not going well. I had to go back to basics and now things are going well again." Malacia has started both of United’s games since the conclusion of the World Cup, keeping clean sheets in wins against Burnley in the League Cup and against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

The defender is backing himself to kick on once more now he is past his drop in form and outlined his aim going forward. "I just have to make sure I play well," he added.

“I already played against Burnley, that's nice. I want to continue that line. I started well here, had a small dip, but I know myself. I know I'm fighting myself back in the base."

Malacia had a frustrating World Cup, travelling to Qatar but not featuring in any of the Netherlands' matches. “You try to support the team as much as possible, but it’s definitely difficult,” he admitted.

“I want to play every game, so yes, it’s definitely hard when you sit there for so many weeks and you don’t play. Sure, I’ve had a moment of I’m through for a while. But you always have to recover. You never know if you have to be there. You always have to be ready.”
