Manchester United 'could be forced to give Nemanja Matic a new deal' to cope with their injury crisis in midfield.

The Serbian, 31, has just six months remaining on his contract and is free to discuss terms with other teams in January.

According to the Sun, United have told Matic's representatives that they intend to trigger his 12-month extension.

Paul Pogba has been out injured since August and recently underwent ankle surgery.

Scott McTominay has not played since suffering ligament damage on Boxing Day and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is short of options in midfield.

Matic is one of the few solid and dependable options available in the centre of the pitch and United are looking to keep him around.

It would also mean they might be able to recoup a fee for the former Chelsea man in the summer if they then want to sell.

Matic earns £150,000-per-week and is understood to be of interest to Inter Milan and MLS side Chicago Fire.
