A supposed leak of VAR audio from Newcastle's tense clash against Arsenal has revealed why Bruno Guimaraes was not sent off despite seemingly elbowing Jorginho in the head.
The game at St James' Park was extremely controversial, with Anthony Gordon's winner for the hosts only given after three lengthy VAR checks. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta lost his rag post match, insisting the performance of the technology was 'embarrassing' and 'a disgrace' that left him 'sick', claiming the goal shouldn't have been awarded.
There were also several other contentious decisions, including a poor Kai Havertz challenge on Sean Longstaff and the aforementioned Guimaraes-Jorginho clash, but neither were punished, although PGMOL chief Howard Webb admitted this week that both players should have received a red card.
However, the alleged VAR audio from the Guimaraes incident has been leaked, with the PGMOL refusing to comment on this despite being given the opportunity to do so by Mail Sport.
In the leaked clip, which was shared on Reddit, the conversations between VAR official Andy Madley, Assistant VAR Stuart Burt and referee Stuart Attwell can be heard.
After the clash occurred in real time when the Brazilian midfielder appeared to maliciously catch Jorginho with his elbow, Madley could be heard saying: '(Stuart) I'm just going to check potential serious foul play.
'He goes into the player... so he lifts his arm up because he's going into the defender.
'Just have a look at this for me Stu (AVAR). For me he sees the player he puts his arm up and there's a glancing blow from the side but for me that's not used as a weapon.
'That's not violent conduct. Are you happy with that as well?
Burt replied: 'Yeah, it's not nice but I don't think it's anymore than a yellow card.'
Madley then added: 'It doesn't reach the threshold. Stuart (Attwell - referee) it's check complete, check complete.'
Speaking on the 'Match Officials Mic'd Up' programme shown on Sky Sports and TNT Sports on Tuesday evening, Webb had disagreed with the original decision.
When referring to the foul play of Havertz and Jorginho, he had said: 'Going forward we would expect red cards in those situations.'
The audio leak - which was not broadcast on the show last night - is likely to do little to improve confidence in the under-fire VAR system.

VAR Is the real spoiler many football matches. Too many controversial decisions made by incompetent officials have spoiled the joy and excitement of present matches unlike the past. BACK TO THE OLD SCHOOL OF FOOTBALL.

English referees are the worst in Europe. very biased FA and never accepting the truth from managers. It's never the best league with these weekly avoidable errors by refs behind VAR

Shut your trap. If not for oil money, even Pep cannot win things. Pep only manage rich clubs. If he so good try manage Nottingham Forest and let them win CL.
No need to argue with you this poor brainless filthy thing.

ManCity had one of the worst VAR robbery last season again ManUnited, among many other VAR controversies they suffered, yet Pep and his players looked past it and worked had to overcome those situations instead of sitting back and lamenting over spilled milk.

What is impediment? You always try you possible best yet something might hinder your result so how do you think Arsenal will win matches when match officials are not allowing you to meet your objective? Some of you guys just sit criticize others not even realizing that it is the person who actually understands the pinch of their shoes. How could you be so sycophantic and cowardice! If this were Manchester city rubbed numerously will day just sit and watch?

how can the on field referee confirm footage by voice without seeing the videos? bcs from the goal n this play all they did was one person describing an action to another n expressing his few point. for me if football is to be stop for this discussion the on field referee should be looking at the monitor always before discussing with the so called var. they once said the on field referee has the final decision but it shows var is re_officiating the football. the lied to us about var

VAR is a fu***** joke. There need competent officials doing it. It’s totally an opinion of the people involved and the same rules are not enforced by all officials!

when a player's head just touch the other player's head, it's red, why clear elbowing is never a red? needs the player to be carried out by stretcher?

My advice to Arsenal & Arteta.. No system is accurate, focus on your football, on improving your play and winning all your matches, accept that things will not always go your way and deal with it like everyone else is doing while we hope for better.. You guys cry alot mehn, that's not how you gonna win the league by crying victim always!

I'm not biased but stating a fact. I'm a big fan and admirer of Arteta since his days at Man City and I love and enjoy the great job he's doing at Arsenal, making Arsenal a rival and tittle contender against City & Liverpool, but recently he's been crying & complaining alot. You don't win tittles out of mere sympathy, you work hard and fight for it through all odds like Pep is doing. Do you know how many times City has been on the wrong side of this VAR, watch City VS ManU game last season, still yet Pep doesn't cry like Arteta & Klopp love to do, Pep fights with his team to get back on the top, improving his play of football, not crying victim always.

Stfu! do you see Arsenal or Arteta still talking about that??? or in this article, do you see Arteta or Arsenal talking.. it's the ref and VAR guilty conscience. don't you know this same VAR b**sh*t caused us 10pts last season, which they later apologized for. add that 10pts and see where we would have been, and now they started again. we already moved on, on to the next one. don't be biased in your comment. no one is talking about that again, just the media.

Why would Webb be covering a serious abnormality like d foul before d goal..?? he knows d truth but doesn't want to tarnish d image of doz referees bcos it is about Arsenal... he should be ashamed of himself as well
