VAR in use for FA Cup 3rd round... but only at Premier League grounds

The Football Association have announced that VAR will be used in FA Cup third round ties.

The video assistant referee system, which has divided opinion during its inaugural campaign in the Premier League, will be used in all third-round matches hosted at top-flight grounds.

VAR had been trialled before in FA Cup semi-finals and finals for the last two seasons, as well as a handful of third-round matches in 2018-19, but it will now be rolled out from the third to the fifth rounds of this season's competition.

Only clubs in the Premier League are currently licenced by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to use VAR.

However, every match from the quarter-final stage onwards will be allowed to utilise the system.

The referee may only use VAR in the event of a "clear and obvious error" or a "serious missed incident", with VAR officials situated in Stockley Park monitoring games as they have done for Premier League games.
